Good call. NO ONE wants a four cylinder supercar, if you can even call it one. V12 might make the car drive like a boat, but if they can render it as well as the La Ferrari, I say why not!

That ship has sailed

This should have been the direction at the end 2014. Mercedes, Audi, and Porsche as well as others are now well into developing different levels of this type of car for their brands.

As for the ambition of 451kw, well, it really needs to have a rethink otherwise it will be back where the i8 was; a starting point but not goal achieved.

Since they have no intention to stick an exotic engine in it, I say skip the hybrid thing and go all electric and do something truly revolutionary that merits a halo car.

Let’s hope it gets something better than a 3 cylinder engine.

And skinny bicycle tires...

Indeed.

I like it. Just move across the 760iL motor. Simples. Should fit in the carbon tub.

No room for passengers but whatever all the kids love drones these days. We can have the worlds first remote control super car. iNNOVATION

hope this car will run circles around the nsx while costing less. the i8 was one hell of a missed opportunity. this one better not go down that route.

For the love of all supercars, please throw in color red into the i8 as a standard color or whatever future supercar BMW makes

600 hp is really not that much in supercars nowadays.

They have. The i division is formula 1 engineers anyway. The fe.18 formula e car was a collaboration.

The i8 with 4 cylinders and a bigger battery/ KERS is all it needs to be a 911.

The i8 runs out of battery at the HPDE level let alone a 'race' despite this being sadly a very unrealistic use of the car for anyone buying it.

The i8 is also, according to users in the forum, tuned like a M240i in terms of suspension. sporty and trackable but not M2 level.

I'd prefer to see KERS and 4 cylinder than a V8 or whatever people are begging for. Also a button to deploy the electric power rather than it being decided by the computer. Basically let's do a LMP1 you can buy. I don't need 600 hp I want 911 power and LMP1 tools.

My guess is that the iM8 is real and will have a WEC GTP car at Le Mans to match it. The timing is far to perfect and inline with BMWs vision of the i brand. They'd love a Le Mans win to cement the deal and a more exclusive i8 to vault the i8 up there with the M1.

If this does materialize, I really hope they drop an inline-six in there.
I know BMW can make a potent inline-four cylinder if they put their mind to it but that's still (on paper) too close for comfort to the current i8 (3-cylinder).
For something that's going to be a halo for BMW, as a representation of its ethos in the performance realm, the inline-six is most appropriate since "higher end"/"big capacity" layouts like V8 and V10 engines are ruled out.

That said, this is an interesting development, and I wonder if this will fall under BMW i or BMW M.

I know previously BMW had said (when speaking of the i8) that BMW i and BMW M would not encroach on each other in an effort to keep their identities separate.

However, with the development of a hybrid supercar, the emphasis is equal on both hybrid powertrain and performance envelope so naturally one wonders the extent of involvement/cooperation of both BMW i (hybrid) and BMW M (supercar).

Interesting food for thought.
I guess it will follow the i8's pattern - 5 cylinder

Ugh, BMW... I've loved and driven your cars religiously for 20 years now, but if you're going to make a supercar, MAKE a supercar.

I bought an Audi R8 before it went out of production (Gen-1). Why? Because it gave me 10 naturally aspirated cylinders of pure bliss. And in the 4 years now that I've owned it, it hasn't disappointed. It screams to nearly 9k RPM and makes all the sounds a supercar should make, while looking fantastic. WHY, BMW, can't you do this?? I would have much preferred to buy a BMW "R8" if you made one...

Now, sadly, you continue to go in the opposite direction. Yes, I understand that times (and drive-trains) change, but a supercar is still a specialty thing - you can afford to go off the beaten path to give enthusiasts something to lust over. I don't lust over silent cars. I also don't get excited about seeing silent movies. SOUND is an important, visceral sensory input for us humans.

And now you continue to disappoint me with the plans to scrap the V12 from the M760 and never put it in the new 8-series. As a 650 GC owner, I'm not sure the 8 offers me much more - I was hoping it would be the next step up. Now, not only isn't there a V12, but even run-of-the-mill luxury options like a premium audio system (B&O) aren't available?

What's going on over there, BMW?

If a 6 cylinder will be used, we will talk about way more than 600hp.
I doubt this since the i8 couldn't get a 6 in the back. More like a 4 with more than 300 - I'd say close to 400hp, if not more - plus the electric engine.

Because making it 100% electric would mean only one word: heavy. Which is something to be avoided.

To be honest, I wouldn't mind an inline 6 if the car sounded half as good as M1 procar.

I wish BMW would stop getting inspired by M1's exterior design alone(aka poser car) and follow its driving dynamics for once..

I see at least one a week. You're saying it looks better than an R8, Ferrari 458, any McLaren or even 911? Even if it had a gas engine the i8 couldn't compete.

Im really surprised it took so many years for them to finally decide to build a supercar on i8 chassis.

If porsche made a road legal version of 919 evo with that 4cyl, people will form long line to get one.
