The base law hasn't changed, it's just not a correctable violation anymore. The panic is completely overblown in this thread. State referee tests for 95 DB @ 4500 RPM. I know this because I did it not too long ago. Why did I get the ticket? Because I was an asshole to the cop, so he made it tough on me. Also, if you pass the referee test the ticket for loud exhaust gets thrown out.

Also when you get tested they also test for emissions. Based on the amount of catless downpipes I would be far more worried about that.

AB 1824 -- Fine for loud vehicle exhausts

Drivers in a vehicle or motorcycle with an excessively loud exhaust will be fined. Previously, they would have been cited with a “fix-it” ticket.

What's the point of the change.org petition? How will getting out of state people to sign it help?

Your eardrums can be pounded into mush by low bass while an A-weighted meter won't even register it. These are just a few of the variables that make a simple statute unenforceable.
The chart I was quoting was (I think) using the standard of 50 feet and the motor running at normal cutting speed (high rpms). No real detail was given. Not sure if the CA law set some other standard or not, but 50 feet from the source is what should be used. Wind is another variable which can't be controlled in the open environments where cars operate.

Your stock exhaust is no where near the 95 db limit. In fact, unless you go muffler delete and test pipe, you likely won't be at 95 db.

Also testing is done at 4500 RPM, not WOT or high RPMs.

It's always been illegal. The only difference now is that it's no longer a "fix it" violation. If you didn't get a ticket prior, it's not going to be a problem now.

94dB at 50 feet is 120dB at the operator position. 120dBA would cause permanent hearing loss after about one lawn.

Hopefully this reduces the urge of people to decat and straight pipe their car at the same time. It's not a good sound. Some people think louder is better when that's just plain dumb

I only say that because I have a port installed MPE, and it sounds like it's louder than 95 db at cold start, but then again, I don't have a decimeter. Not that any of this matters to me anymore...haha

I'm sure you are fine. Also, you can always run the test in efficient mode which should keep 2 of those valves closed. The car that I tested had an aftermarket exhaust and ran a 82 DB, which honestly I felt was way too quiet. But I took my certificate and ran.

Nope - local municipalities need the money, the rest are just creative pretexts.

Californians are just like their taxes more than the rest of us:

My understanding of the law -- the old way was a fix-it ticket for a loud exhaust, and the new way is just a regular non-correctable ticket IE Police cannot write it off. it becomes a state ref fix, along with 1k fine. not sure if it gets state ref fix you dont pay the 1k fine.

So i would assume if your exhaust is Carb / Cali compliant and under 95dbs you are good. Reminds me of when the Dodge SRT4s came out back in the 00's folks were getting pulled over for the stock exhaust.

still sucks though.

Do people even know how loud 95db is? DB scale is logarithmic but for comparison, 90 dB according to something I quickly found on Google from Purdue University is a jackhammer, for 100 dB they're using aircraft and helicopters to describe the sound. 80db is where damage starts to happen with prolonged exposure

The majority of everyone's modified exhausts on here are not close to that 95db limit

100% this. If your exhaust is comparable to a plane taking off, you deserve the ticket.
