Is this dealer trying to rip me off?

Buying a car in Alberta, Canada

What's up with BMW anti-theft fee and cold weather package?

The cold weather package are rubber mats. If you don't want the mats, they'll remove the charge. But you'll have the carpet mats as a default.

Also, get them to dump that admin fee. It's a rip for sure. In Toronto, it's $200 LESS at my dealer...try to get them to explain EXACTLY what the admin fee is for; even if you're financing or leasing that $500 can't be justified.

The anti-theft charge is for the etched serial number/vin - basically the vehicle can be easily tracked if stolen

I bought a toyota a zillion years ago and the dealer insisted that I had to pay for the etching that was already on the car. When I got home I read the fine print of the agreement that the etching company provided. That fine print explicitly said that one need NOT pay for the etching if they did not want to have the ability to identify the car if stolen. I called the dealer the next day and they sent me a check. Bottom line in this circumstance was that the company etched the cars for free so the dealer could try and stick their customers with an extra charge/profit center. But for those who refused to pay, the dealer was out nothing.

what up with the Freight/PDI $2995? WTF? I thought delivery was standard at $995. I've never seen that.

Etching fee is not mandatory. Ask them to remove it. The admin fee is standard at most dealerships in GTA. If you can negotiate that then all the better

What about cold weather package? I'd rather spend money and get weathertech.

That's CAD $ and his delivery will be greater since he's out west. Freight to Toronto was around $1,500CAD (can't recall now), which would be a little closer to your $995 fee, US $ of course.

It's actually Parkview but the M235 we once had came from Budds and they were about the same.

The one that both tried to charge me for was $395 for Ride Green...that's nitrogen in the tires. I told them I wanted regular air.

Yikes! That's a lot of dosh for "air"!! Surprising at times what some dealers slip onto the invoice

Actually I had a lot of fun telling them both to take out nitrogen for regular air. Parkview just takes it off now because they can't stand to listen to me.

All of those are too high.

Just get the freight and PDI from the bmw website and show it to your dealer. If you still want to deal with them. I wouldn't... BUT, I live in Toronto and I feel there are more BMW dealerships than Starbucks.
