Just remember to include this in your overall cost for the marriage. Meaning that you have a greater than 50% chance for divorce and then you'll be on the hook for alimony, losing half your property and possibly child support. If you are comfortable rolling losing another $50k or more for a ring as part of the deal when you break up, then certainly go ahead. She won't be returning the ring.

As stated earlier, the whole pay multiplier is pure marketing and certainly diamond pricing is also fabricated. With that said, if you're traditional, diamonds are certainly one way to go. If she really means something to you, I would get a more affordable, but nice ring on the scale of 1 carat for the main stone. Anything larger especially on a normal sized woman is oversized. Take the remainder of that $50k after you buy the ring and get her a nice ETF in her name only. It will be far more valuable over time and it's all hers if something happens to you. Setting her up for success in your unlikely demise is really the best expression of love. An ETF may sound boring and isn't something you can show off, but the long term benefits are far more significant than a ring.

The ring is also an investment as it will go up over time. Not sure it will go up as much as my portfolio though.

Actually most rings tend to lose a lot of value, not gain value.

IMO what ever amount is spent on a ring for a woman should be spent on a watch for a man. Make that the rule and it feels a whole lot painful.

The other advise I'd give is stay away from retail. Go with blue nile and your dollar will go 30% further.

Funny (and sad) that this thread started with the notion that a wedding ring should cost 3X monthly pay, and now ends in divorce.

This 3X pay concept was hatched and brought to you by the freakin' diamond industry to sell more of their product! Somehow that's been bought off on and we are told everyone else generally accepts that as culturally correct. Brides to be latch onto it like it's some social construct that must be followed out of tradition. What ever happened to the tradition of the father of the bride paying the husband to be cold hard cash to take his worthless leech of a daughter off his hands? Maybe it's time to bring that tradition back?

I'm happy with the $250 my fiance got me for my bday... Couldn't imagine a $6,000 watch. I don't think I would wear it out.

That's because most are paying far more than the value of the materials. Buy the diamonds on the open market and make the damn thing yourselves in your DIY basement and you'll be getting better value for the dollar.

Lol. Read the first post in this thread and was going to make a post saying to find someone else if this is a concern. Saw the thread was 3 years old, so jumped ahead... and it looks like it's too late for that advice.

A lot of a guy's problems in life could be avoided if he simply unloaded the "gun" prior to going out or on a date.

i take all gold diggers just the same; not to be offensive to your girlfriend; I don't know her.

I live like a poor person minus a few nice things I own; in fact its probably just my car.

If girls are all over my because my car and they dont know jack shit about cars; they become THOTS that hoe over there

speaking matuerly; idk sticky situation man; these things matter to every human in some way or we wouldnt be human. I guess it comes down to if they make it dealbreakers or bust your ass over it. But I cant take high maintence girls; and girls that need 50k rings to look good are insecure, and i can't have that; because I live like a poor man. Shallowness runs rampant in our country; whereas warrent buffet looks like your standard old man walking out of a retirement home.

I have a hole in my tshirt at the gym; and I think people sometimes judge me off it. Like its a fuckin gym sorry I didn't spend 100 dollars on my workout attire. then i probably get into my car and their rationalization is; LEASED FINANCED lol. But after seeing how my dad walks around dressed; I realized don't every judge a book by its cover. People showing up overdressed and blinged out are usually the poorest in the room

Just reading some of these comments are hilarious. You guys have no problem dropping 20-40k on a 3 year lease but complaining about diamonds worth couple thousands.

For me I did go overboard but in the end the happiness that brought my fiance was priceless(She did buy me a rolex though). Also I couldn't justify buying her a small rock due to her profession and high salary she was earning.

She still doesn't understand why I need to drive a "M3" or why I need to buy expensive mods that are just pieces of metal, but that doesn't mean she doesn't accept what I like in life.

+1... my wife told me later that on our first few dates she was kind of apprehensive about me as I did a lot of head turning when we were out.

Then she figured out I was looking at cars and not other women. She has supported my habit ever since!

wow long time ago. Yup, I was being sarcastic in my response to the OP as I had a feeling his SO was more into materialistic things than the OP himself.

As for the OP, congrats on the divorce. Keep your head up high (both of them) and have fun.
