They can also be on while driving and daytime running lights are on. At least this is the case for europe, not sure about US...

Usually this is not allowed according the laws, but they use a trick...because the headlights connect with the kidneys, they also count as part of the daytime running lights – and so can stay lit while the car is in motion.

An illuminated grille is now also available as option on the 5 series. I believe the accessory's official name is "Chrome Iconic Glow Kidney Grilles."

Illuminated logos from Infiniti, Mercedes and Lincoln I understand. It's tacky and gawdy but I get it.

The illuminated grille has to be the stupidest thing in the world.

Looks a bit crap to my eyes, to be honest. Bit like a Merc interior. There's a thin line between tasteful and tacky, and this has crossed it.

Patiently waiting for my X5 to be delivered. One question about this internal lighting, I know you can select the color, can you also adjust the brightness?

It looks very bright for night time use in that video?

Reminds me of Tron. I like it conceptually but not in practice.

The lighting kidney grills is just plain ridiculous in my opinion.

I think the interior lighting has got too much now to the point of it being distracting, is so much LED lighting really required? Though I am presuming that it can be turned off in the idrive?

X5M C, countdown has started

I love it, all of it. I wish there were more colors, seems like blue, orange or white. I'd like a button to push so the ambient lights would adjust with the music, colors and timing. BMW should consult with Chris Kuroda, aka CK5, he could get the lights dialed in just right. I just hope the comfort setting isn't overly harsh for the 60 mile work commute (round trip) and I highly doubt it will be. Two more months!

Absolutely!

BMW idrive settings allow you to change colors, adjust brightness or turn it off entirely, if you feel the lighting would be distracting.

Totally agreed. Way too much ambient lighting. It's not considered ambient anymore when you put led lights everywhere. The current F models got it just right. Just needed more embedded colors. Digging the ambient in the sunroof, the Virtual display and soso on the Grilles.
