Skipping songs not working

As the tittle says. I’d say 2-3 times a week the skip songs buttons on the steering wheel, the center console, including the hand gesture stop working. The only way for me to skip songs is on the actual screen, that works. To resolve this I have to reset idrive ( hold the power button for 30 secs). But I have to do that several times a week.

I use Apple car play, don’t think it’s an iOS problem because it works if I touch the screen just not the other ways.

It’s a 2020, manufacture Warranty is over but I have extended premium warranty.

Anyone experienced something like this before?

I’m not on the latest update, the one previous simply because it doesn’t update, at least not yet.. ( we all know the struggle of software updates on BMWs)

This happens on my new one as well.
I have also seen it lock up on FM/Sirius and not let me change channels.

And you reset it on a weekly basis?

Did you ever bring it up to the dealership?

While I don't and never did have this issue, I bet it's pretty dang frustrating. What software level are you on? Before taking it to the dealer, be aware that they might want to update the software to the latest level for your car. Don't know if you actually want it updated or not, seems you did but just be aware.

You could try loading a hundred or so songs on a usb drive, plugging that in one of the usb ports, I use the one between the cup holders and see if you get the same issue.

You could also try disconnecting the battery to see if that has more of a long term fix. First do another iDrive reset, then shut the car down. Lift the hood and leave it up, access the 12v battery under the cargo area by removing like six black plastic pop up fasteners, disconnect the battery's positive cable. Wrap it in a towel and walk away for 15 minutes then reconnect the battery, button it up, close the hood. Who knows if this will work but its something you can do yourself either instead of a dealer appt or while you're waiting for your appt.

I've been seeing this while using CarPlay lately. I can always tell when it's gonna happen because the driver's display starts showing the song as "Unknown Artist" while the main screen correctly shows the song info.

I'm honestly not even gonna bother mentioning it to the dealer. All they're gonna do is 'reset everything' and declare it fixed when I get the car back, while the problem will likely be quietly fixed in the next software update.

Gestures were hit or miss for me, so I turned them off altogether. More often than not, it interpreted random hand gestures as a command while ignoring the purposeful ones.

It's not a system I ever had before this vehicle, so no real loss.

Hmm I have a service appointment next week so will bring it up and see what they say.

Very frustrating and annoying that this keeps happening and to a number of us. software updates usually help but another challenge is to actually install them…

For those who are having the problems, does it occur solely when using CarPlay? I've never had the issue playing off the USB stick, and I rarely use CarPlay for listening to music

Carplay for me since I use Spotify through it. Someone said that they have the same issues with FM and XM radio as well

Luckily I've never taken my LCI to the dealer.
Not sure how often it happens. Usually once I can get it to move on, it works again through all buttons.

Has been happening in my 2021 X7 and my 2020 M550. I assumed either a software issue - not worth updating or going into service over - or just a BMW gremlin bug. This thread could be evidence of either.

MY21 45e. iD7 11/2023.50

I connect via CarPlay with much success and tend to use gesture control to skip media tracks or change radio stations. steering wheel and center console buttons still work likely due to little use comparatively over the last 3 years

what version is your software? itshere not easy to determine if yours is a hardware or software issue.

This is all very interesting. I use the skip song button all the time (when pulling the tunes from the USB) and have never once had it falter in 2 years. I never use it to change stations and can't imagine the circumstance when I would, but I would imagine it would work there fine too.

I can say that if this problem arose for me, I absolutely would do what is necessary to get it fixed. Would drive me crazy

If you have Spotify premium (paid, not a free version), I'd say use build-in App in the iDrive. Works like a charm and doesn't drain phone battery.

This problem happened on my iX often and also happens on my 24 X5. Less often on the X5, but a real annoyance. BMW is in over their head with software.

It’s an issue with the CarPlay/ idrive. Not exclusive to your car, I believe it came with the last software update since I never experienced it before.

If you change you gauge cluster to see the music, you’ll notice it will say “unknown title” and then the controls won’t work. When it shows the title/ song, then you know it is working.

I notice it happens sometimes after I leave my car and get back in. Like if I’m dropping something off then get back in my car after a brief amount of time, it’ll say “unknown title” and not work.

Are you using Spotify or Apple Music just out of curiosity?

Using Spotify via Apple CarPlay. I actually never updated to the latest version - i though maybe that will help this issue but it’s not installing the latest update - might need a manual push from the dealership.
