Digital Key Users: Service Appointments

Has anyone taken their car in for service and attempted to give them the key card instead of the key fob? I don’t carry a physical key anymore because my phone/watch is the key, and I use the key card for valet. I know the dealerships have key readers that probably wouldn’t read the the NFC key card, but I figured they could still look up the vehicle by VIN to process the paperwork and use the key card for accessing the vehicle. They told me there is no way to manually enter the VIN. Does this sound right, or is it BS? Curious if any other digital key users have run into this.

When digital key becomes prevalent enough, I’m sure they’ll start adding verbiage to the service appointment reminding users to bring the physical key rather than the key card.

I would think they can enter the VIN, in at least some areas, but best to just take the fob with you. I remember see one person who didn't and they refused to work on the vehicle.

I don't see an issue regarding giving them a fob.

No issue. Just didn’t have it with me; I keep them in the safe at home, never needing to be used again. It didn’t dawn on me until I was halfway there that they might need it for the key read at check-in.

I did once forgot the key, expect to be turned away, but they were able to do a remote read to diagnose issue and accept the key card do the service.

I don't recommend not bringing the physical fob to service appointment though, YMMV

My car was just in the shop for a recall fix and they initially accepted the key card. But then I got a call a couple of days later saying the card stopped working (weird?) and they need the key to continue fixing the vehicle. Luckily the dealership is near my work so I just dropped off the fobs but lesson learned, always carry the fob to a service appointment.

I made the same mistake a few weeks ago as I never carry a fob with me and solely rely on DK+. Luckily I had the keycard in my wallet and my dealer had no issue using it for the service visit. Seems odd that they would give you an issue about this. Dealers should probably get used to this as less and less people even think about their fobs anymore because of digital keys

it’s not just about access to the vehicle (locking, unlocking, driving). they need the key fob to retrieve diagnostics. the key card can’t help them with that. several SAs at my dealership have told me this for over a decade.
