2020 X5 Performance Center Delivery and BBQ Road Trip

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
See full writeup/pictorial at: http://g05pcd.blogspot.com/

Posting here to share my X5 Performance Center Delivery and BBQ Road Trip Writeup.

First some basics: The car was ordered on 7/22 and delivered on 8/29.

Full spec: 2020 G05 X5 40i - 5 seater
  • M-sport trim
  • Convenience pkg (Included with M-sport)
  • Premium Pkg
  • Arctic Grey
  • Coffee Extended Leather
  • Matte Poplar Trim
  • 20" M-sport standard wheels (740M)
  • M-sport brakes
  • Space Saver Spare
  • Comfort Seating pkg.
  • F&R Heated seats and front armrests/console
  • Drivers assist Professional
  • Park assist pkg.
  • Harmon Kardon audio
  • Extended shadowline trim
  • Leather dash
  • Alcantara headliner in anthracite

This trip covered over 1,000 miles and included BMWs, BBQs, Porsche, Harley, and some minor road-damage (BOOO!). Oh well, it’s only a car.

I thank you for your patience if you decide to sink your time into a full read – and apologize in advance as I can be wordy. My writing style can be love it or hate it – if you’re in the entertained camp, I’d point you to my European Delivery trip report from 4.5 years back. That full report ended up being very detailed, much more car focused than this one (And less BBQ!), and also represents close to 40 hours of my time invested on it.

A few niggles to write home about:
  • After 4 days my digital keycard stopped working.
  • On day 2 the entire iDrive went kaput with ‘No Signal’ until I could reboot it. Which BMW 100% should allow while the car is in motion. It’s a bad look to have your navi go dead while on a highway at 75 in the mountains with spotty cell service, and quite unfamiliar with the area.
  • Passenger seat massage makes a weird muted pop near the top of the backrest after it’s been on for 15-20+ minutes. After 1 or 2 of these pops, it seems to go away.
  • My garage door opener doesn’t want to easily link with the mirror buttons – will have to use the learn button on the actual opener housing I think, but I'll need to move the fun car out first to access it. Will get to that eventually.
  • I did have my carplay go out for about 10 seconds on the ride home yesterday. First time and didn’t happen today – hopefully that’s a one off.

The final review is: The G05 X5 is one hell of a total package. I don’t think anything in the segment comes close to providing the polished finished product as we are getting in a mildly to well equipped G05. The smaller engine option, the 40i, is more than enough to move this car without strain. A super smooth combination of engine and gearbox that never makes its presence known – I’m very very happy with it so far.

F80 M3 Euro Delivery Trip Report (This one is a long 3 parter, better get comfortable before settling in to read it)

Thanks again for your time! Enjoy those Bimmers!

You can reboot iDrive while in motion without any issue. I do it all the time, at least once or twice a week. Thanks BMW for the need to do it. The whole process from push to normal with all connections restored and all apps running takes around 45s.

(Fun forum fact: if your quoted text contains a markup code like "square bracket asterisk square bracket" used for bullets, the quoting markup fails to quote.)

I enjoyed the write up! Thanks for posting!

I take it the factory tour was open and available? Did you get to see the G05s being assembled?

I’m also thinking about stopping for some BBQ after my upcoming PCD. If you had to recommend 1 or 2 places, which would they be?

Also, are there any things you wished you knew beforehand or things you would have done differently?

hmmm, very odd. I tried holding down the power (volume) button for upwards of 45-60 seconds while driving and idrive wouldn't reboot. As soon as I put the car into Park, it worked with a 30-35 second press. The car wasn't turned off between the failed rebooting while in motion and the successful reboot in park.

Hopefully I'm never going to try it out again.

Thanks!

Thanks for the read! Yes, factory tour was open, but not the G05 line - we were in the X3/X4 hall, and saw quite a few X3/X4M's being built.

Definitely stop for some cue if in the region. My recommendations would be based on what meat you'd want and also what area you head into.
  • There's not much in this world better than true East NC style whole hog. Now, being at GSP, you're not on the East side at all - so, go west from PCD towards Clemson to Circle M BBQ, if you can get there, and they're open.
  • If Asheville is in your plans, you can get whole hog at Buxton Hall, but I have heard it can be hit or miss. My visit was HIT, but I make no guarantees.
  • If going further West is not in your plans, for straight pulled pork shoulder (or if in NC, just barbecue) - I'd recommend Red Bridges BBQ in Shelby, NC, with Lexington BBQ in Lexington, NC a very very close 2nd. The red slaw at Lexington is really special - get it on top of a barbecue sandwich and you'll have no regrets.
  • Haywood Smokehouse (Dillsboro NC and Waynesville NC) is my recommendation for traveling sauces, as well as the brisket.
  • If you're a bones and ribs guy, I was highly surprised at Okie-Dokies in Swannanoa NC - probably the best ribs I've ever had (for sure in hog country).

Things I wish I would have known/prepared for. The shitty 12V socket not being compatible with my radar detector. That's 1. #2 would be having a single bag/box with just the things you'll need in the car. Tissues&napkins/Paper Towels/Leather wipes/Microfiber/few bottles of water.

I'd also recommend, like another poster recommended to me and I subsequently ignored, to stay another night in Greenville. It's going to be a long day, you're going to be up early - and if you do the track sessions first, you'll have that initial adrenaline spike, and the follow-up energy crash, before 10:30-11 am. You may want to go visit the Zentrum, which we bypassed solely in the interests of time. Most people probably do, but keep your phone in your pocket. If you put it in your bags somewhere, they'll be taken and you're without them until you get the car. Oh well.

Aside these, just show up and enjoy the experience!

Definitely check out the CCA Foundation while in the area.

Have fun and good luck!

Awesome [/SARCASM]. Sounds like a "fix" in more recent iDrive software. What's your version?

If we track this down to version, how utterly pathetic will it be that instead of fixing crashes and other bugs, BMW chooses to make it more difficult for their paying-through-the-nose customers to deal with their bugs.

I believe I'm on the 7.2019 version - but not 100% sure. Can you give me a quick primer on confirming it and I'll check in an hour or so?

*EDIT* - found it in iDrive and confirm the version installed is 7/2019.35

I, too, had the good fortune to do both a European Delivery at Welt as well as a PCD at Spartanburg. They are completely different experiences but both are amazing. Your write up of both adventures brings back fond memories.

Thanks for sharing your stories with us. I was lucky enough to have worked in Amsterdam for a few years in the 90's. We love the Netherlands and have been back for visits since living there.

Your PCD story matches our experience. What a first-rate program they put on.

Anyone thinking about either European Delivery or PCD? My advice is just do it.

In fact, this post has me thinking about doing it again.

Enjoy the new X5 and the M3. What a great combination of vehicles.

Good write up! my experience in early August was the same - though my wife and I did stay the extra night in Greenville - definitely recommend that.

My car had the 3/2019 software on it and still does, but my experience has been pretty good. I leave the Carplay engaged, but I've been using the iDrive Nav while listening to iTunes or Audible on my iPhone. I do use the Home button to go back to idrive from carplay.

I also drove from Greenville to the Parkway, to Asheville, up Mt. Mitchell, to Little Switzerland, Boone and then home to Charlotte - idrive and nav worked perfectly throughout. (I have had to reboot it once since when carplay would not connect - I think the 12.4.1 iOS update *may* have caused it. It's worked fine since.

PCD is highly recommended - will always do that in the future!

Of course! Glad to be able to bring happy memories to the forefront for others. It is a great time, if I decide that a G80 order is on my agenda, the plan will be to do the Munich-->PCD doubleheader on it.

After hitting something with under 1,000 miles on the G05, though, I'll probably work to get PPF done in the south before coming home in the next purchase.

It is really a great program they offer, and the ride through that region never disappoints. Some weird software niggles, but nowhere near as frustrating as the Apple iOS release where text messaging went offline for 2 or 3 days. In the car, as long as I know where I'm at or going, who needs the electronics? If it starts, stops and steers; main functions are online!

I STILL cannot get over just how nice this thing is inside. I really feel that I've got no business driving something this nice. It's wild!

The results from the poll of members regarding iDrive reboot while in motion overwhelmingly indicates ability to do so across a variety of software versions including yours. In fact, yours is the only report so far that it can't be done. See below and perhaps try adjusting your "technique" :-).

Happily I haven't needed to try the reset since the first time. It's very possible I wasn't doing something right, but the process is so elementary. It's most probable that while driving and holding the power button in that as the car moved on the road the button was intermittently not depressed for that entire interval.

Thanks to Bimmerpost and admins for the front page shoutout as well!

holy bbq batman.

nice specs.

the coffee will wear well I think. Good choice.

damper tuning is very good isn't it? almost like its on air. 7-9 hours no prob.

While it shouldn't be in an ///M car, I think the idrive 7 and dash suits the X5 just right (overall).

Appreciate it! Yes, it's really a great daily driver proposition, hard to beat it I think. It's as close to air as I'd be happy with in road feel, it's super compliant, but any more float and I'd not have been thrilled.

One other thing - I drove the F80 this weekend for the first time since I've picked up the G05. WOW. The interior felt instantly dated. That's the first time I've ever looked at the F80 iDrive screen and thought it was TINY. Adding to that, the HK radio in the F80. I thought it was pretty damn good for oem, but the HK in the G05 blows it out of the water, and then some. I know a lot of this is due to the sound deadening differences, but the quality is so so much better.

The rebound tuning is what should have been on the F80's - the compression tuning is fine, but the rebound on that platform was bad. This one is perfect.

Thanks!

How do you reboot the iDrive on the 7-series?

(Fun forum fact: if your quoted text contains a markup code like "square bracket asterisk square bracket" used for bullets, the quoting markup fails to quote.)

If iDrive 7, one would assume the same way as on G05 X5: press and hold volume button for 20+ seconds until the infotainment screen goes black and then let go. If not iDrive 7, then you are asking in a very wrong forum :-).

Nice write up! Saw the part about there being no good spot for sunglasses. Have you tried the little cubby thing by your left knee? Has a little pull latch to open then works like a champ unless you have some Elton John sized shades. You also mentioned the vent air temp being buried in iDrive...I'm not sure what you mean exactly. It's immediately switchable via the up/down toggle switch for both driver and passenger right on the climate control strip above the cup holders.
