UPDATE: FIXED - X5 M50i Creaking sound rear pass area. @Dealer total:49 days

I have a creaking sound from the rear passenger side on my 2020 X5 M50i. It has been at the dealer and body shop for 23 days now trying to resolve my issue to no avail.

It occurs when there is a change in inertia or vehicle flex, such as at the start of acceleration and braking, and also when driving out of the driveway where there is a small curb. It sounds to me like a thin metal on metal creaking sound.

Anyone else with a similar finding? It is quite frustrating that there is still no resolution.

Yes!!!! This is hands down the most annoying squeak/rattle in this vehicle. I can't stand it. Most annoying when driving in neighborhood blocks with lots of stop signs. Every start/stop I hear this stupid creak.

I have tried sitting in the back seat to find it. I found when pulling the passenger door handle very hard, it stops it while you're holding it. But I have no idea what causes it.

Please let us know if you find the source of it!

I have exactly the same issue. I thought it was the seat latch as other threads mentioned? It's so loud...

What do you mean by seat latch? Child safety latch? At first I thought it could have been the little plastic door over the latch but it did not seem to be the case.

I am kinda going crazy because I've been without my vehicle for so long now. I know too, that it has just sat there for days without them even working on it. I contacted corporate regarding the issue last Friday...

I would start researching your states Lemon Law on this issue. 23 days is TOTALLY unacceptable. Especially if they have no fix solution for the problem.

You might want to just politely ask the dealer for a refund or a new vehicle. If they refuse tell them you are starting a Lemon Law case for the problem.

I don't believe this is the seat latch issue. I also had that and eliminated it by wrapping the latches in electrical tape. However, the creak described by the OP is still there.

We had a similar type issue and I believe it was the passenger side. When I took it to the dealer they took care of it by replacing the door seals. We've never heard it since.

Sorry you are going through this mess.

I love your comment that it squeaks when there is a change in inertia. In an M50i X5 is there ever NOT a change in inertia!

Here's hoping they will find and fix the noise soon.

I have the same issue. I rode around in the back while a friend drove. I believe it's the hatch glass.

When on the passenger side, if I press on the glass from inside to out, I can mostly replicate the noise. Not true for the drivers side.
My first appointment for this noise is next Wednesday.

Thank you for your input. I'll pass along to the dealer. Have you been able to eliminate the sound?

That's was what the service foreman said during the initial drive with me, but that was 24 days ago, so I guess that wasn't the issue. Thank you for your thoughts though.

Exact same issue, car has been at the shop 3 times. It's there now for 3 days waiting on some resolution. Here's mine:

I'm sorry to hear. Based on what I'm hearing in the video, that doesn't seem to be the same creaky sound that I experience. Although may not translate well on the recording? Yours sounds somewhat like a lower tone knocking sound, where as mine is a more higher toned thin metal creaky sound if that makes any sense.....Although the more I listen to it, I wonder if it is the same sound just not coming across the same in the recording. When do you hear it? Like I described above? Thanks. Let me know if they find a cause.

Interesting. I can replicate mine by pushing on the glass as well but the dealership doesn't think that's the problem. I also have a friend that works for the auto glass company that does both BMW dealerships in Minnesota and he said he doesn't think it's the glass as well.

My vehicle is back at the dealership, returning from the body shop, after 9 days of sitting there. I received a text update, only after letting the dealer know that I was aware my vehicle was back at the dealership (via my surveillance using the onboard cameras and vehicle status).

The response from the dealer:
Hi Matt, yes your vehicle is back here. My shop foreman and the tech engineer from BMW returned with your vehicle today. There was a couple spot welds causing the noise that needed to be reworked.

After my hopeful response to them, they reply with another:
We are going to keep it at least another day for a couple test runs before we reassemble the vehicle and deem it completed.

(meanwhile my vehicle is returned with a few hundred extra miles on it. How many test runs...and did they have to test 0-60, lol. I'm trying to be optimistic about this.)

After listening to it with different speakers, that does appear to be the same "creaky" sound I was experiencing.

Please see my message above regarding what the dealer has explained to me. Do all these vehicles have bad welds, I suppose. The midwest regional "expert" should now be aware of the issue.

I just hope there assumptions are correct as it appears they are confident. Not sure why will need it for at least one more day, however? Why more than one day to test it?

Interesting. They said this morning that they're still working on the trunk and that it goes away when the car warms up. They work on it for half the day and then park it (remote view for the win) and then let it get cold overnight again.

Actually just heard back again from the dealership. The Midwest regional "expert" was actually on-site looking at mine today. He said it's not the spot weld issues. So who knows now.

Day 25.
I inquired about my vehicle this afternoon since I received no update from them and was expecting/hoping to get it back today.

Their response @2:23pm: "BMW has not given us the go ahead to release the vehicle as of yet. So, my technician has not re-assembled the vehicle. I will let you know when we hear back."

You take your vehicle in thinking to get it back the same day or maybe the next day, but it is pretty unfathomable to not have it 25 days later and counting...
