There is a small self-righteous group that think any self-placed M on "non-true" M cars is a crime against god and country. It doesn't get through to them that BMW themselves are now completely random with M branding and badging and that they don't own the cars they're judging. There are social limits to rebadging, but these reactions are just nonsense — BMW themselves have randomly placed and not-placed side Ms on M Sport optioned cars depending on time and geography (eg US M Sport 40i get side M, early Canadian did as well, later Canadian did not). It's all BS now, do what you want.

^^ my opinion on the matter is that as long as you aren't trying to pose as a different model then its ok in my book but people can do what they wish.

I have an m car. I wouldn't put an X5m badge on my wife's daily driver. I figured there's a 50i X5 and a m50i X5 which is a sportier version. Since bmw doesn't offer that for the 40i msport I did it myself combining dramatic mods and 80 more hp. Seems very appropriate imo

Given the environment, I had some extra time today to wax the X5 and snap some pics. Delivered mid February and put maybe 500 miles on it (was in Florida for the past few weeks). Overall review is somewhat limited to it's fast, has nice sound at cold start but bouncy and guzzles gas (in line with every other 8 cyl TT I've had) in comparison to my 540i. Overall build quality seems superb and I am completely satisfied with the options selected, though secretly wish I had opted for DHP. Rear seat wrinkle is minimal and piano trim is already a dust collector but worth it in my opinion. I'm currently the envy of all my Range Rover owning friends!

I would say adding the performance upgrade is the difference. Otherwise, putting an M40i on a 40i is pretending because putting an M in front of the 40i implies M Performance, not M sport. Not the same thing... but with the power boost, you've created a new variant for yourself I guess.

But whatever... it's all gotten out of hand. These competition variants may actually bother me more at this point. The ///M car used to be the suped up top variant. Now even the real M cars have another level above them. Just another money grab I guess.

My honest opinion is because it isn't an M. Obviously you put it on because you felt it made your vehicle somehow better or why make the change?

This isn't about BMW snobbiness. This is just really looked down upon by most legit modders.
