My car jerks at stop...(auto)

I've read threads with Manual trannies jerking when it comes to a stop, but I have an Auto and when I sometimes make stops, I can feel the car jerk a little. I can feel it in the brakes and sometimes it scared me that I wasn't pressing on the brakes hard enough. Anyone w/ an Auto have the same problem? Does it go away? Is it just part of the break-in process?

Mine is Manual and it does not jerk at at...

I have automatic, the brakes on the car is pretty grabby. I was never able to get to a nice slow stop, it always ended up jerking a bit in the end. But after 2000 miles, its much MUCH smoother when it comes to braking. Not sure if it adapts to me or I adapted to it. Perhaps the brake pads are finally worn in? Either way, I think you should be fine as well.

I still sometimes come to an abrupt stop, where the car actually stops but the forward momentum of the people is still too high and they go forward/back. that's just my driving, I guess. As long as the car stops, the rest is learning to drive it a bit better.
If the car continues to move, you may have a problem, as is mentioned in one of the other threads.
I have auto.

I noticed the same thing. it didn't "scare me" but I just make sure my foot is firmly on the brake and it is not really an issue for me. You just can't casually "touch" the brake pedal to hold the car in place. It's as if the car wants to creep if you lightly rest your foot on the brake pedal at a complete stop.

The jerk you feel, is the soft stop feature releasing brake pressure to the rear caliper attempting to smoothen out the stop. Scope of problem is limited to automatic cars because the torque converter that allows the car to travel forward after brake pressure is released...Problem is, the computer is deciding when brake pressure is released...

I complained about this problem on another E90 forum and engineer from BMWNA has contacted me and a West Coast Field Engineer is suppose to be coming to my dealer within a week or two to check the problem.

It's very dangerous and there have been times where my car has traveled 6 inches after a stop. I have filed multiple complains to BMWNA, NHTSA, and Continental Teves (supplier of brakes and DSC system).

I haven't heard of this problem on manual transmission cars. It seems to only happen on ones with automatic transmission.

Mine does it as well.

It is very difficult to achieve a seemless halt - blame the car, I do.

Happens to me also. I'm not worried about it, but it is annoying. Since the breaks are easy to modulate to slow the car to a very nice stop without this feature, perhaps it can just be turned off...

I may complain to the dealer just so they know it's happening though.

There is no way to turn it off via BMW DIS computer. The only way to get rid of the feature is if BMW recalls the DSC systems and removes it.

Personally, i find the brake very difficult to modulate. If you release too much, the car will slip, due to soft-stop releasing brake pressure. Too hard, and the car will stop abruptly. Very fine line to stop the car smoothly.

UPDATE

My dealer, BMW of Honolulu, called me this morning to tell me the West Coast rep is flying in Tuesday morning to meet with me and look at my jerky brake & soft-stop problem. Usually, BMW's regional reps don't meet with their customers and only sevice personnal, but they are making an exception and allow me meet and speak with him. I consider this a full-faith effort on behalf of BMWNA and my dealer to address my problem.

I know several of you also have this problem, so I hope to keep everyone one to date on this issue, and a few other issues (seat belt rattle, hesitation, shimmy) that I will bring up at the meeting.

Odd; I've found that this behavior got a lot better after my first car wash (just this afternoon). There had been a bunch of brake dust on the bottom part of the car, and "crunchy" brake behavior also, then I washed it and the crunchy part and the inching forward part have gotten better.

I think I'm remembering similar crunchy brake feel at low speeds back when I first got my 2000 e46...

At first, I thought it was a 325 problem only...but it seems we've been having some 330i owners having similar issues... BMW really needs to get rid of this soft-stop feature. It really doesn't nothing to smoothen out the stop, and actually creates longer stopping distances.

I'm new to the post or forum. Anyhow, with regards to the "jerks," i too have the same problem (330i - sorry no sports package). This is my first bimmer. I did called BMW of Fremont, Ca and also BMW USA, they both haven't heard of that problem (yeah right). However, I called BMW of SF, CA, they insisted the problem lies with what they called NIC (Neutral Idle Control perhaps comfort stop, dsc, or others to mentioned other names used) and it can be programmed to be disabled, that is according to them. But the vehicle has to be brought into the shop. If you want more technical terms, call BMW of Sf, 1-800-523-9413 x 8864. I hope this is the root of the problem. My car has less than 1k and the car handle like it is on rails! I hope my post helps as I am concern to find out what the problem may be, because jerking about 4-8 inches is accident prone! I too, need to bring in my car to be resolved. But let me cut a few corners first!

I would like to ask, should I go with a nosemask or a clear coat protective? Please address the advantages and disadvantages of each if you're so kind enough. Thanks.

when i first got my car, i noticed at times when i have come to a full stop, it felt as though the car wanted to inch forward or jerk while i had my foot on the brake.

i'm at over 10k miles now. either the problem has gone away or i just don't notice it any more. i guess i'll have to pay attention later tonight on my way home from work.

It's caused by a combination of the super-low first gear and the grabby computer "assisted" brakes. Prove it by shifting into neutral before stopping (like a manual) - SMOOTH! I use manual mode in stop and go traffic to keep the auto from shifting below second, this does help but still not a cure.
I personally find this to be the MAJOR FLAW in automatic cars, and I'm surprised BMW didn't catch this at the factory OR come up with new software to alleviate this problem!
