Very flat and muted otherwise. Would definitely take it over Pythonic though. |

Currently deciding between Tanzanite and Phytonic blue for an X3 M40i. I'm leaning towards Tanzanite but am a bit worried about the upkeep. Obviously I know it's a darker color and what goes along with that trade off, but I've also seen some conversations about Tanzanite being "soft"?
I used to wash my cars by hand, but the reality is that this one will spend some time at the car wash. For Tanzanite blue owners, any additional feedback about living with the color that may be helpful? Much appreciated... |

I have Tanzanite blue - certainly do not find it to be a "soft" paint. To date, I have not found any swirl marks on the paint although I generally hand wash my cars.
If you intend to use a car wash with automatic brushes you can rest assured that you will get swirl marks - it is inevitable. Tanzanite blue is a dark colour and the swirls will definately show. I would suggest you either anticipate you will live with the marring or get a white car which does not show swirls as much. |

As many have said, at the end of the day it's a personal preference. If you prefer the more traditional blue route, then Phytonic blue is the way to go. It will always be that "blue vehicle" no matter what, and many want that.
However, with the Tanzanite Blue, you're going to get a color shifting blue of sorts. Depending on the lighting, you may get a dark blue, a deep violet blue. a flat dark blue, or even a black. The metallic in the paint really pops in the sun as many have said. Having had this color myself for the past several years, I have zero complaints and wouldn't have changed my decision if given another chance. Honestly, both colors of blue are on the darker side, so the upkeep in terms of washing is probably going to be the same. Softer paint? I'd say from my own experience and from what I've read around here that's the case with all the 2019 X5s and on. But maybe BMW has corrected that in 2021/2022? I'm guessing not though - I have no idea. |

Both great colors. For me it was a coin toss and ended up with Mineral White which works well here in SW FL.

The forums made me want Tanzanite, but only Phytonic blue was available. I was worried the lighter blue would not look good on a big X5. But I will say the Phytonic looked much better in person than in the photos. Its darker than I thought it would be, and in dark/overcast/ golden hour settings, it looks fantastic. Its also unmistakably blue in every lighting condition, in a good way.

Tanz is a special color. Definitely looks best in sunlight, looks much darker in shade. Almost looks like a bluer version of carbon black. Is it work 2k? That's a personal choice. If I was choosing between Tanz or Phytonic, I would definitely go Tanz, in a lease you are talking about a trivial amount extra in the monthly payment, so the cost is almost a moot point.

Hmm based on side by side pictures, I will take phytonic. I do like deeper blue, but The purpleish tint is not my favorite. Maybe something like Topaz will be my optimal color for a family car.
