The critical things when selecting alternate tires are, first, will it fit (i.e., have enough clearance on full bump or max turn), and second, on mixed sizes, how close the rolling diameters are. That will affect the all-wheel drive system if they are not very close to each other. You need to maintain that to less than 2% difference.

Germany mandates the speedometer never read slow. To help with that, the speedometer is programmed to be about 2-mph higher than actual. Going to a larger rolling diameter will mean you're traveling faster than your speedometer and registering fewer miles.

The size of the wheel does not affect the odometer or speedometer as long as you utilize the OEM tire sizes. IOW, you could swap from 22" wheels to 20" wheels, as long as you swap tires to OEM sizes, and the odometer and speedometer would remain the same.

That's why I gave an example of MB GLS tires, i.e. vehicle with transfer case. If it works for MB, it should work for BMW. There are other configurations which should work as well, but to avoid speculation about problems with all wheels drive, transfer case, etc. I gave an example of GLS tires.

Any difference on the speedometer vs. actual speed can be easily checked on GPS.

I understand that using different tire sizes than the manufacturer suggests is not an endeavor for everyone. However, it is shocking for me that so many people are just complaining about lack of tire choices when there are other choices, just not given on the plate.

Congrats! I was in the same boat, I'm likely going to do 275/40/21 tires at all corners, TireRack said it'll fit fine on the rear wider rims. This opens up the Michelin Pilot Sport A/S and the Crosscontact. I've posted in other threads on this. Just a thought.

Meanwhile, what are people doing who want to use their 240v outlet with the 45/50e? The BMW made plug is apparenlty on back-order.

I know some are using Tesla chargers, with a 3rd party adapter, guess that could work, even though BMW doesn't recommend.

275/40r21 is the stock tire size for front, right. Using the same size in the rear is fit, diameter match perfectly. Mounting 275mm tire in 10” wheel will work too. Just tire will recess a bit, be more careful doing parallel part.

As for evse. It does not matter what brand you use. BMW of course want to seek you over price oem evse. For the money, I think emporia brand evse is a very good deal. I would go for that instead of the big brand names unless you find sale or other perks.

ANY J1772 EVSE will work with any vehicle in the USA except for a Tesla, and they do have a converter from J1772 to Tesla plug. There is an adapter that will let you use your X5 with a Tesla destination charger (NOT a supercharger).

The differences will be in features that you may or may not care about. Some have WiFi connectivity, which may also have some additional control features, but they are maybe nice to have to some people, but not necessary to charge your vehicle. I'd first contact my utility company to see if they offer a special rate if you use one of their recommendations. On the 50e, any EVSE with a 32 or greater amperage output will charge the thing at its maximum rate. A smaller one will still charge it, but slower (and cost less).

0-60 on this feels significantly faster than my X3 M40i. in Sport mode and coming off a light, the front of the car literally lifts off the ground a bit. The torque is amazing.

Hey I am also upgrading from '21 x3 m40i and expect 50e in a few weeks. Just curious are you sure 50e feels faster?

I see x3 m40i official 0-60 is 4.4 while x5 50e is 4.6 and I was expecting a slight downgrade in performance. If 50e is indeed faster that would be a pleasant surprise.

understood, but since both are BMW "official" acceleration time I expected in real world a "BMW rated 4.6" can do better than 4.6 but worse than a "BMW rated 4.4" lol. maybe that's not how it works.

There's also some unit to unit variation, and you shouldn't try that until you've broken everything in. Unless you're at a drag strip or looking for bragging rights, does it really matter about 0.2-sec?

If you read the fine print...the 14-50 does not come with the car. I was not aware of it until the very end. I told my dealer that I wasn't buying an $86K vehicle that I couldn't charge in a reasonable time. He pulled the plug adapter off of one of the cars on the showroom floor and gave it to me. They're around $200 if you have to buy it. I can't imagine having to wait 20 hours to charge the car on a 110V outlet.

No, that’s the wrong part number. Here is a nice summary about the flexible fast charger that comes with 50e that someone posted in the 50e Facebook group:

“Flexible Fast Charger (FFC) info from 50e bimmerpost forum.
There are 2 versions. The 50e FFC is version 2 and the 240v NEMA pigtail is different between v1 and v2. I spent a great deal of time with the dealer trying to get Level 2 (240v) charging working for the included FFC, including getting the wrong cable (which will fit, but throws a fault), reordering it since it was assumed bad, even dropping the car off at the dealer so they could check out the FFC.

This was more a minor annoyance since I got a $239 EVSE from Amazon made by WorkersBee that has worked great and successfully charges the car in about 3+ hrs.

So here’s the part number info for the Facebook group.
Cable BMW #61905A13A61 is NEMA 14-50 cable for v1 of the FFC and will
NOT work with the FFC v2 included with the 50e
Cable BMW #61448490525 is the correct NEMA 14-50 cable for the 50e FFC v2. I believe it is just entering the ordering systems and there are supply issues and they are back ordered. That may clear up quickly (personal speculation)

Hope this saves some people time. It’s been a frustrating issue for me to get the correct answer and part number.”

Only seeing one tire for staggered setup, so will probably go with 275s, all around.

As for plugging in, will probably just use my Tesla plug with this adapter.

If you already have a Tesla, or Tesla EVSE, sure, the plug is the way to go. YOu can even use this plug at Tesla destination L2 and get free charging. This at least worked for me. Not sure when will Tesla stop that. But if you don't have a Tesla EVSE, then I see no reason to buy Tesla and the adaptor. Just buy the native J1772, it will work better

How do you see the trip data graph on the 50e with the Idrive 8? The previous 45e you can see the graph but when I open the trip data on the 50e it only shows the Kw and the picture of the X5 on the right of the screen but doesn't show any graph so I cannot see my mpg continuously..

Hi, only 4hours for you to get 50%charged? My First charge on my 50e today, from 65% - 80% shows need 5 hours with 10 A current limit set in the system, is this normal?

THere's about 20Kw of storage in the battery. The charging process, especially in the summer where you may be using some cooling may mean you source maybe 22-23Kw to fill an empty battery - the power supply is never 100% efficient - ever feel your phone charger? Power=volts*amps, so if you're plugging into 120vac, at 10A, that's 1200W/hr. 22000/1200=18-hours and 20-minutes.

The flexible fast charger can max out the charging rate IF you can get the optional adapter cord and plug it into a 50A 240vac circuit. THe max the 50e ca pull is 7400W/hr, so 22000/7400=3-hours or so.

@rainMaker5000 thank you for sharing your impressions.

- how did you like steering feel? Does it have a tight on-center feel or pretty vague? When I test drove gas x5 ‘24 noticed that until I get >50 mph the steering felt very loose/numb on center and was not precise. Does hybrid behave better with extra weight and air suspension?

- are standard brakes sufficient or M performance brakes recommended for car this size?
