they are not open by default in sport mode, you need to hit at least 2000RPM from what i understand for it to open in sport mode.
That would be something new. I always thought they were open in sport, at least it sounded that way on my m40i

Are we talking about the valve at the very end of the exhaust or is there another one somewhere else in the exhaust system?

On my X4 M40i, both exhaust pipes have gas coming out when in sport mode and idling. I do not have a video where I am sure I am in comfort mode, but I do think it is the case too.

When doing a cold start, the left one is closed. Opens up after a bit (like under a minute in normal weather, maybe longer in winter).

Cold start video: https://youtu.be/sIInPaDixWE

After an hour of driving: https://youtu.be/t83DpmsxaQg

I love this exhaust. If the X5 m-sport exhaust sounds similar on the 40i i will be happy.

Honestly that sounds awful, the B58 sounds way better even on a bad day

I accidentally used the same link twice... So all you got was the cold start.

I edited the post to put the correct url for the second video, which should sound better than the cold start. Here it is for convenience https://youtu.be/t83DpmsxaQg

I was trying to show that the valve on the left exhaust was closed during the cold start and then after the cat was warmed up, there was exhaust coming out both sides even at idle.

On the 50i both are open on a cold/warm start thankfully, not sure about the 40i. Overall the B58 still sounds better than the N55.

Although the exhaust got better after the break-in period (videos were when the car was less than a week old if memory serves me well), from what I've heard on youtube, I do agree that the B58 sounds better and pops way more on overrun too.

Pop pop POP Pop pop.... love it.

I am actually thinking that since the X5 has much better soundproofing than my X4, I may not get to hear any pops and bangs when the windows are up.

Did you notice a difference with your 50i?

My G01 X3 M40i was way more aggressive with the sound but my X5 50i has a deeper groan and sounds better. Insulation is very good inside plus my acoustic glass makes hearing the engine harder but open a window and it sounds great! I'd rather have peace and quiet inside even though my V8 sounds good

I agree. I would rather have the great sporty sound, with the option to drown in out by rolling up the windows. Lol

You see that sounds like a Sports Exhaust. The 40i DOES NOT POP OR BURBLE AT ALL - ZIP.

If anyone has a 40i and thinks otherwise, please please please let us know and post.

X5 40i with M sport exhaust.

In comfort/eco pro, thanks to the silencing of the car it is very quiet inside and for me it is an ideal solution for traveling the highway at higher speeds.

In the Sport options the exhaust becomes much more laud and has a very nice bass sound even from the lowest engine speeds. For my wife it is even to laud on highway at speeds above 130km/h.

However, this is not a sound like in the X3 M40i - it is calmer and less aggressive - no pops. Probably because of the higher class of the car - more mature, less aggressive.

I also heard from a BMW dealer that the current X3 M40i for Europe also has no pops. This is due to the emission restrictions and the GPF filter.

No pop or burble with the M Sport Exhaust in Canada either. It has a backfire crackle at gear changes on heavy/full acceleration (very similar to my S5), but that's it.

Thanks EJ and BC, I have not yet heard the crackle so will fill her up with some high octane and see what happens on the motorway at the weekend. I used to have the S5 and traded out for similar reasons - lovely car but it is not the least bit exciting. I prefer your 2014 to the face-lift, wasted a LOT of money trading in for the face lift which was much less of a looker.

I went from a C63 to the S5, and it was quite a bore to say the least... That is until I did an APR tune to the ECU and TCU - it's now pushing over 458hp and quite a fun car to keep around

S5 was the supercharged V6? Big step up from the 335bhp!

Its a cabriolet so has the 3.0 supercharged V6 (only the S5 coupes were V8 in NA I believe). The tune completely woke the car up, its like a totally different vehicle than before, which is why I've held onto it for so long.

That sucks.... I had hoped for a similar sound to what the X3 M40i has...

The X5 B58 is not an M Performance model so it will not sound as good. My 50i with the N63M sounds good, but I'm sure the proper M50i will sound better.

I dont know about the current X3 M40i, but drove it last year in Europe (also newest model) and had plenty of pops. Maybe they changed smthg for later year production.

Yes the X3 M40i does in the US too but the X5 40i is a different vehicle...

GPF has to be mounted in UE since November 2018, so there is a big chance you were driving version without it.

The ones here do, and they sound better than the S55/N55 hands down
