Snow Chains

Looking for a snow chain solution for the new X5 305/40 R20 wheels.

Of course BMW says they don't support snowchains on anything but their 19" wheels.

Has anyone found a workable solutions - perhaps using spider chains or other?

Would be good to understand how others have solved this.

Since they don’t support it I would not try anything as you will put your warranty at risk.

Like some EU and US areas, snow chains are mandatory or needed in certain situations.

Any G05 above X-Line has an issue with snowchains ie: non R19 wheels.

Still keen to hear how others have solved this

Melbourne is just south of the Australian Alps. Lots of snow there. Just ask this guy.

Thanks Sygazelle. Lots of people can't believe it snows in Australia - generally the Australian Alps.
The issue downunder here is that when people travel to the Alps winter tyres are not required, (and fairly rare) whereas snow chains are usually compulsory (Victoria).
This is different from many other US and EU areas.

Consequently BMW doesn't support the use of snowchains in Australia on their regular (summer) tyres other than 19". Perhaps because of the low(er) profile of the summer tyres.

Here is some language from the BMW Owners Manual for the G05 about snow chains:

Fine-link snow chains

The manufacturer of your vehicle recommends use of fine-link snow chains. Certain types of fine-link snow chains have been tested by the manufacturer of the vehicle and recommended as road-safe and suitable.

Information regarding suitable snow chains is available from a dealer’s service center or another qualified service center or repair shop.

Use

Use only in pairs on the rear wheels, equipped with the tires of the following size:

255/55 R18.

265/50 R19.

275/45 R20.

Follow the snow chain manufacturer's instructions.

Do not reset the Tire Pressure Monitor TPM after mounting snow chains, as doing so may result in incorrect readings.

When driving with snow chains, briefly activate Dynamic Traction Control DTC to optimize the forward momentum.

Maximum speed with snow chains

Do not exceed a speed of 30 mph/50 km/h when using snow chains.

They should weight a lot less then steel snow chain and looks to me should also way easier to install, remove and store.

May not be too durable but should be good enough for occasional ski trips.

Make sure to enable "Snow chains" mode if you have integral steering.

Thanks Sygazelle - that information in the US manual is very helpful. BMW here just say chains on 20" wheels are not supported.

I don't think you will need snow chains. I have never needed on my Pirelli all season plus tires in a car that was not AWD. I used to carry with me because it is required by law while driving thru mountain passes in Oregon and Washington. X5 is AWD and has Pirelli's all season plus tires which is a great combo in snow/icy conditions.

I noticed that inconsistancy too. The other takeaway from the BMW owners manual is that chains only go on the rear wheels. I always thought you needed tires on all four wheels on AWD. Maybe I was mixing it up with 4 wheel drive, who knows.

I have never needed chains for my AWD Explorer but I carry chains case. I'll get the fine link chains for the G05, just for the rear, and plan to never have to put them on.

This is great information. I just bought a set of Winter Wheels with 275/45/20 Blizzaks. Do you have a recommendation for a set of fine snow chains?

and why do they only go on the rear tires of an AWD vehicle?

Snowchains are required to be carried by law in many Alpine areas in Australia. Winter tyres are not required and rare.
In Australia, the BMW manuals have always said the chains should be fitted to the rear wheels of X5.
I think BMW has a concern with chains fitted to wide tyres with a low profile. eg: 305/40 R20, although this is only speculation. The wide surface area of the tread and low profile, means chains are not adequately supported with sufficient sidewall grip on the lower profile tyres.
