Crystal “Glass” shifter control

I have a 2022 X5 45e.

Unfortunately I didn’t get the Glass Control Option and I want to install the Glass Shifter. I thought I would do the alternative and add the shifter now, I know I can acquire the after market kit but I found a BMW dealer that would sell the OEM part for a reasonable price but I called a local dealer in my area he said it would be $650 to install it, then he mentioned something about reprogramming which didn’t make sense.

Anyone have any experience with the swap out process (either doing it yourself or by a dealer)?

Thanks appreciate your assistance.

PS I posted this on my FB group, sorry if you see a duplicate.

From what I’ve read the aftermarket crystal gearknob is slightly different to the OEM part.

Whereby the OEM part does need coding in to activate the light whereas the after market variant does not need coding

If you are going down the aftermarket route follow the instructions carefully, and particularly the bits about fully disconnecting the batteries. There are lots of stories of people blowing the circuit on the gear console and car not engaging gear after messing with the gearknob, as they didn’t disconnect the batteries (some cars have 2 to disconnect)

You don’t have to disconnect the battery if you remove the entire center console. As someone who did this, I recommend removing it (watch the video on the aftermarket parts). There are small delicate parts you need to work with and doing it in the car would make it unnecessarily hard. I have the aftermarket one and it is perfect.
