G05/iPhone 12 pro max/digital key
Has anyone tried setting up a digital key with the new iPhone 12 pro max? I cleared out the previous key from my iPhone 11 and the phone throws an error trying to add the key to the new one. Genius thinks it may be a compatibility issue so I'm hoping someone else here can try it.

Same here with a 12 pro max; getting this error message.
Also a message that "the key can not be released" or something along those lines in iDrive (it's in Dutch in my iDrive) Have an appointment next Friday at my dealer to look at it with the sales guy. |

Just added it on my wife phone with no problem. We have ATT if that helps. My wife has 12 pro max and I have the 12 pro and the digital key works on both with no problem.
Go into the iPhone settings, then wallet settings and make sure the old keys are not showing. If so, remove them You also will need to go into Apple Watch app, then Wallet setting and remove the old keys from there. Once removed, then try and add the keys through the BMW Connected Drive app. |

I also had no issue of having the key into iphone 12 pro and 12 pro max. My wife is primary user, used her phone to get the key. She shared the key to my phone and also transferred to my apple watch.

Well, the dealer knew as much as me. It was the first time he ever played with that feature himself, so... He also had no clue why it was failing.
We made an appointment to bring the car in next week for 2 days; they will open a case with the team in Germany but the car needs to be connected to their system while it's being diagnosed. Will let you know if/when it ever gets sorted out :-) |

So. I got it working. I'll sketch the timeline of the events that led to the success:
- this morning, got into the car and went into the menu to "reset" the digital key. this causes you to get a mail from ConnectedDrive with some info about how to set it up - didn't do anything with the mail, figured I could just forward this to the dealer later so he can use the link to try it. - dropped of the kids at school (made 2 stops that included shutting off the car and walking away) - drove to the bmw dealer - shut down the engine (pushing the start/stop button) - figured I'd try it one last time, "just in case": I clicked the link in the mail from ConnectedDrive I got earlier this morning, this opens the Wallet app. Followed directions, put the phone in the tray, and it paired succesfully. So obviously just drove home again after informing the dealer it's no longer needed I don't know what prompted it to work as I tried all different kinds of pairing before, also together with the dealer; with the link from the mail, from the connected app, manually, ... And I've reset the digital key multiple times before. My phone updated from iOS 14.2 to 14.2.1 in the mean time, maybe that has something to do with it. Hope you get it working too! |

I’m setting this up using iPhone 14pro with iOS16.2 on MY23 X5 xdrive 45e (whew) and I’m having the exact same error. I tried as far as resetting iPhone to factory defaults and setting up as new iPhone to no avail. |

- brought my iPhone and key fob inside the vehicle. - deleted my old iPhone. - ensured both wifi and bluetooth were on (blue) in my iPhone 14 Pro. - went to COM > + New device. - as the vehicle was looking for my iPhone, i found that going into its Settings > General > CarPlay would show the vehicle ID for pairing quicker. - once my device was found and showed on the vehicle screen, i tapped on its name and followed screen prompts on both the iPhone and iDrive - done! then i set it up as Digital Key - opened MyBMW app and tapped on Set up Digital Key - followed the on-screen prompt to place phone in the NFC tray - went to Car > Settings > Doors/vehicle access > Digital Key > Activate Main Key and followed the on-screen prompts. -done! **ensure no other iPhone is already assigned as the Digital Key because there can only be one. I’ve done several ways including this cycle: Turn to drive ready —> turn off —> open the door —> step out/in —>close door —> the with 2 keys inside the cabin perform digital key activation. I’ve tried 3 different procedures as well: (1) the myBmw app (2) email link (3) manual code entry (uncommon) and I keep getting iPhone error that says BMW key cannot be added. I’ve searched online and apparently others have issues as well and it seems the activation is finicky. |
