M50i - Not a good sign
Looking to clean out the garage before winter is in full swing and then I see a odd pool of fluid on the garage floor.
The leak is coming from the rear. I can't tell if it is an axel seal, pinion seal or something else. What is everyone's thoughts. 2600 miles on the clock. |

^ Exactly. Let the dealer take care of it and likely there will be no long term damage since you seem to have caught it early before hearing/feeling anything wrong. Keep us updated on what problem/fix was.

I had the rear air suspensions go out on me a week after the warranty had ended on the previous F15. Trust me. I did not sleep well that night. However, BMW Canada covered it under warranty because they had opted to extend my warranty for an extra month due to Covid-19. I was really really lucky.

Looks like M Sport rear-axle differential, output shafts. The silver finned portion is the rear cover and the tubing in the last photo is the vent pipe.
Looks like a slow leak, but I'd limit high speed driving and definitely take it to the dealer to confirm.

Sorry about the poor photo orientation. I will follow up next week. Hoping its just something that came loose. I doubt it a coincidence this happened a couple days after I final decided to push it hard and get some 40 - 100 and 60 - 130 times.
I sent my SA the photos this afternoon and said they would have a car ready for me when I can get it in next week. My SA is truly one of a kind and the only reason I keep buy BMW's. |

Ran it hard for 77k wonderful and worry free miles....then it was time to trade it in. Wish I could put the G05 interior in the F15 body. Oh, and the M50 motor too. |

Parts list

can you tell me which app or website are you using, to get those drawings with parts lists? I am having a bit of a struggle with my dealer, with only 2000 miles in my m50i. This would be a big help to understand my problem as well, and put more pressure on my dealer. Sorry for the off-topic comment guys... |

Update.....
Dropped X5 off this morning. SA messaged me that it was a bad axel seal. Ordered new ones for both sides. Replace seals and top off the fluid. He said; never seen them go bad at such low mileage. Any thoughts or concerns I should address? |

It's good that it failed early! Things break that is what things do, glad to see it happen early on and not just after warranty... lol

Just chalk it up to another quality control problem in my opinion. Seal failures under those conditions (i.e., very new) are usually attributed to improper installation. Your flogging just exposed that flaw early.

I can't tell if it is an exhaust drone or not. When you are at speed and put the car in Neutral, is the noise still consistent? |

There are warranty repairs done on many new cars, no big deal. Late model vehicles are incredibly complex compared to a couple decades ago. Take it to the dealer and get it right.
Anyone who has been around BMW, Porsche, MB, knows that you really don't want to own these cars without a decent warranty. |
