F95/F86 vs G05/G06 platform designations
I don't recall if this has been discussed, but does anyone understand why F95/F96 are not instead designated G05/G06? I initially thought that maybe BMW based the 2020 X5 M cars on the previous generation X5, but the more I check on various parameters, the more it is clear that F95 is based on G05. Even a Gxx designation other than G05 would have made more sense than an Fxx designation.
For that matter, I don't really understand why G05 vs G06 (and maybe even G07) are not all the same platform designation — they are clearly the same platform (G07 is definitely arguable from some mechanical points of view). And it matters, because random designations create chaos and confusion for software, hardware, maintenance, and accessories. For example, I was researching wheels for F95 and was sure they were going to be 5x120 bolt pattern per F85 (you know, 'cause they are both Fxx), but no, F95 is instead the new 5x112 bolt pattern. Why arbitrarily cause more confusion for the entire supply chain? Anyone know the rationales for the modern randomized platform designations?

I think its just count until you hit three digit. So F95 in the next gen would be a G. Since F95, G05 are just model numbers if you look in the past they just keep adding up and start at E go to F and now we are seeing G start....
I could be overly simplifying it but that is what it looks like to me. Some links: https://bmwcarclubgb.uk/e__f_numbers...%20F%20numbers. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_BMW_vehicles

Good question, one which I don't have the answer for. I assumed the newest generation of X5M would be G95, not F95. My 2015 was a F85, and the base X5 was F15, so logically the newest gen X5M would be a G designation, or G95.

It is F95/F96 because it was on the roadmap and was in development before they decided to move to g serial.
That is why we have m5, x3m/x4m, and x5m, x6m as f. |

That's a fair assertion, but since G05 and F95 are so closely related, why then is G05 not F95 (or Fxx) instead then? Calling two platforms (not models, platforms) which are the same by different names is chaos. A rose by another name may smell as sweet, but you still can't drive it.
