2020 X5 rear ended on Sunday
My 2020 X5 was rear ended Sunday while I was waiting to make a turn into a subdivision. The vehicle that hit me was a 2018 Toyota forerunner. The driver acknowledged he did not see me as he was putting his phone down.
He was cited for failure to control vehicle. His insurance company has set up a rental car and my car is currently at the BMW dealer. The car suffered a lot of damage. But it did not set off any airbags. The visible damage or the upper tailgate and lower tailgate , the rear bumper, cameras, the catalytic converter, the left quarter panel. The rear left wheel, rear left tire, and who knows what other damage will be found. Sadly the vehicle was less than 12 months old with 14,000 miles. Not sure what it's going to take to repair. I'm also concerned about the diminished value aspect of the repair work. You can see the damage to the vehicle that we are ended my car. Pretty substantial. I do not know how fast he was going. I also I'm not sure if my car has the recording system on it. If it does with that rear end collision have been recorded to where I can go back and save it to a USB drive? Wow, sorry to see that. Hopefully, you're safe and sound.
If your state allows for Diminished Value Claim, I would fight for that. Alternatively, depending on the price of repairs, you could push to get it "totaled", so you can get a brand new one. |

As long as you are fine that is the main thing. The vehicle can be fixed or replaced. You should have the drive recorder but you may have needed to set it up in order for it to record. Go under Apps and see if it is there.
Keep us updated on how the repair process goes.

I will be curious to see how the BMW collision center estimates the vehicle. I know that there are items probably that I have not even thought of that deal with the impact. Such as the headrest. |

Easily north (maybe way north) of $10-15k, considering possible damage to the rear axle. You're then climbing into 50% of trade-in territory for a 14,000 mile car. Totaled could be a good guess.

Depending on the amount of damage, and where it is located (bent frame isn't an immediate total, but a likely total loss) most companies will declare a total loss on any vehicle where repair costs are 75% of vehicle value. I am glad no one was hurt, that is the most important thing. Last note, airbags only fire if your vehicle is hit in a way where they would be life saving, and a lot of the time you need to be going at least 25mph for them to deploy, so not entirely shocking they didn't deploy in this situation.

Drive recorder is included with the parking assist package, prior to that was tech package I believe? I am not aware of it being a stand alone option anymore, maybe it can be coded?
Sorry to see beautiful X5 get hit like that, but at least everyone is OK. Toyota must have hit really hard for it to deploy airbags like that. Is it me or the scarred taillight looks much better than stock with black interior exposed. Take care and I hope they total the vehicle and pay you fair value. Do they normally look at the frame, otherwise they don't total? I think it's insurance company thing, do they have right to say where/who repairs it?

For MY19, 6DR Drive Recorder was not available but could be added via ConnectDrive BMW for $99 at the same time BMW made it available for MY20 models online as long as you had optioned ZPX - see attached technical req. image.
For MY20, 6DR Drive Recorder was included with ZPX Executive Package ($5600 xLine 40i, $4550 M Sport 40 and M50i) or it was available to purchase separately via ConnectDrive BMW for $99 (3yr) - see attached technical req. image. For MY21, 6DR Drive Recorder is included with ZPK Parking Assistance Package ($800) - see attached image. Despite being included, it still requires set it up.

You may not have access to the vehicle to check for the drive recorder, but you could check in the BMW connected drive store if you have an active subsciption for the drive recorder.

I have the parking assist program but I'm not aware if the cameras were turned on or not. I guess I can take a flash drive to the dealer and see if I can get into the car.

Glad everyone is safe, looks like your X5 did what it was designed to do!
Looks like he was moving at a pretty decent amount of speed when he rear ended you. Sounds like everyone has already answered your questions on the drive recorder. Hopefully your insurance company takes good care of you. Good luck! |

FWIW, my 2019 X5 4.0 was t-boned on the driver's side back in September. Majority of damage was isolated to the front end and driver's front quarter panel, but all side air bags deployed due to the collision. Estimate to repair was ~$27k, and after a brief discussion with my insurance company they agreed to a total loss claim and I ended up settling for just over $60k. Initially my insurance indicated a total loss claim would need to be 50% of the value, but after review they agreed the damage total was close enough since it would be very likely more damage would be found once repair work was actually done.
I did pay for the Drive Recorder option, but unfortunately I was not able to retrieve the footage from the car. At the time of the accident, I attempted to download the clip, but I couldn't get the iDrive system off a "Accident detected" warning screen (or something like that). I later attempted to do the same when the vehicle was in impound, but the electronics in the car were no longer functional presumably due to dead battery. We did attempt to use jumpers but that didn't work either. I also could not retrieve the spare tire from the car due to the dead battery, since I couldn't get the hatch opened. |

Went to the vehicle this morning and the recorder had never been initialized.
Very disappointed that that was not done when I purchased the vehicle with the genius at the dealership. We're at the body shop this morning I asked when they were going to do the estimate and because of their backlog they did not think they would get to it this week. In addition to what they see that's evident what should we be looking for that is concealed? Are there any electronic actuators like the head rest or seatbelt reel actuators that they need to check? I am sure that the dealership since they work on BMW, Mercedes, Audi go through the repair work estimate very carefully. Last edited by midwestbmwguy; 11-25-2020 at 11:35 AM.. |
