Display questions

Still getting used to my new 2024 X5 and am curious about the display settings. Specifically:

AR in the gauge cluster
Is the purpose of this view for direction overlays on the camera view and if so, does it only work with the BMW nav vs Apple Maps?

HUD
I don’t really understand the various views if this one as they don’t seem to provide much info. Sport mode view are just lines… and the others don’t seem to offer much either. How do you use the HUD?

I was about to start a new thread about the idrive driving experience mode. I cannot find a good video or manual explaining the power meter and the blue line that fills up when braking. It would be nice to find a guide explaining all of this.

That means it is charging the battery. The vehicle uses brake energy regeneration and the alternator is on a clutch that is only engaged when coasting or braking. The exception to that is when the battery is low, around 60% then ot will stay engaged until 80% or so.

Thank you.

Do you know of a good YouTube video that has an explanation of all the modes? I have searched and cannot find one. I checked beamerviews and he does not have a video on it.

I have seen some older videos out there that aren't bad. It really is a matter of trying the different modes out and seeing which one you like best, The DDC can change various aspects of the vehicle including Damping, Steering, Transmission and Engine/Throttle response. So for example if you go to Sport mode:

Damping; The EDC Sport program will be activated and it will become a stiffer/more sportier ride. If you has air suspension the vehicle will also be lowered.

Steering: it will be a heavier feeling.

Engine/Throttle: response will be quicker, ie. sport throttle

Transmission: Gears will be held longer

Yeah! I am still searching for a good video explaining the lines and power gauge. I even read the manual guide and it says it has a power gauge but does not explain how to use it. I downloaded the Driver Guide, no information about it.

HUD should show directions, MPH, speed limit, stop lights or stop signs and some other info. Have you tried the on steering wheel menu to change the HUD visual?

Maybe this will help?

AR only works with BMW satnav.

If you use apple carplay, you can show the apple maps on gauge cluster; likewise, if you use android auto, you can show google maps on gauge cluster.

Think of it as your Tach but showing percent of power rather than RPM's.

you don’t “use” the power gauge. it’s simply showing you how much electric motor power you’re utilizing at that time (in percentage) much like a tachometer does when using the combustible engine

well, I guess one way to use the power gauge is as a guide for “hypermiling”

He has an M60i so it would be the Tach.

Yes, I have the M60i. I guess the Power Gauge is to tell you how much battery you have and can use it for sprint mode or whatever else is used for.

I only see it on Eco mode.

The power gauge is how much power you use to accelerate. Arrow 1 is the regen area when you lift off the gas pedal (there is a car in front) or braking, it will show how much regenerative power you can get.

Btw you can always change the gauge mode in any driving modes with 3 lines button on the steering wheel.

No, not at all. It is exactly as I and the manual described. Haven't you noticed the percentage increase as you step on the throttle and then have it go down when the gear changes?

I'll send a video, the blue line goes up when I brake, and it starts depleting when you start driving, not always but sometimes.

Sounds like you are looking at the regen. That is showing when the battery is being charged.

Yes, but there must be a reason for the percentage.Energy is being stored for use.

I have never seen what you are talking about. I can only go by what I have seen on mine and what the manual and other owners say. The percentage is your tach and the regen is the blue below it.

Just like in the screenshot you posted, it is showing the RPM in percentage.

RPM and power percentage are actually different even though they are kind of similar since the engine has virtually linear power curve. Power percentage is just how much power you use of the maximum power of the car. Let's say the max power is 525 hp in M60i, the percentage is the fraction of power you use from max 525hp.

And the difference is where the power curve is no longer linear above 5200 rpm; the power stays the same at 525 hp up to 6200 rpm. So at the range 5200-6200 rpm, the power percentage will stay the same at roughly 100% even though the rpm is changing. The power percentage will drop off if you go above 6200 rpm with manual mode even though the rpm is increasing. That's why I prefer to use rpm instead for better reading.
