"Mistakes" on sales worksheets?
Is anyone else seeing "mistakes" on dealer sales worksheets? On the last few cars I bought, Nissan, Toyota, Porsche, and BMW, I found "mistakes" on the sales worksheets. Some large, when they added the agreed discount instead of subtracting it, others small by not calculating tax and license fees properly, or adding extras not agreed to in the sale. Maybe they are honest mistakes. But none of them have been in my favor. I would think that a person whose full time job is filling out financial paperwork would get it right most of the time. Don't their forms automatically calculate tax and license fees?
Am I just unlucky or am I the only person that now takes a calculator to the dealership? |

They might be trying to make up for loss profits?!? It’s happened to me twice already (both 2024 X5) on deals that were agreed upon, only for me to walk away.
Now I’m at a second dealership, waiting 5 weeks and counting, on my X5 to be delivered. There is a stop on it that my sales guy failed to mention when the deal was done. |

I will give them the benefit of the doubt and think they often don't pay much attention to them because in the end they really don't mean much, they are just trying to make the sale.

I’ve had many dealer finance managers who are quite competent and pleasant even though I never buy any of the packages they are selling. Once in a while I’ve encountered a finance manager who is a downright sleazebag and it was obvious from the minute I sat down to complete the transaction. On one case he kept trying to upsell me every imaginable add on and insinuated that I was a fool if I didn’t buy. I simply kept saying NO to everything which pissed him off. In the end he forgot to collect $900 I owed and I purposely didn’t remind him. I ended up getting a bill and paid it but got some satisfaction from the experience.

Totally agree. I will give benefit of doubt to the closer for mistake in the sale contract. Ultimately, I am also responsible for closing the contract for the car I am buying too. To delegate a responsibility, there is always a cost associated with it.

Most of the mistakes I have seen in the Title and Tax fees triggered mostly when I buy an out of state vechicle. Last time, I ended up getting a refund check, bc the dealer over charged me on the tags.

TL-DR You really have to and tick and tie your numbers, especially your amount financed.
We had two transactions with the same dealership, but different F&I personnel. The first transaction went fine, credited us our deposit as a component of money down, never was an issue. However, the second transaction was a totally different experience. They had the deposit amount rolled into the amount financed, and told us it was their policy to refund the security deposit. We made them redo all the paperwork to reflect the deposit as cash down. Why would they think that someone would go along with paying them again in the form of an incremental increase in monthly payment with interest if it was put on their credit card months earlier and paid off interest free. |

barbE In my experience some finance managers are less than honest. Most are okay but I’ve occasionally had one who outright tried to cheat me.
