Residual Heat??
I've had an E70, I'm currently driving an F15 and have a G06, M50i on order for PCD in April. I have my F15 in the shop for some maintenance and bumper repair and have a 2020 G05, 40i for a loaner, so playing with a lot of features to prep for my G06.
Both my F15 and E70 had the Residual Heat function. I can't figure-out how to get it to work on the G05...is it still there or did they dump that feature? |

You can actually hit just about any HVAC button and turn it on (except defroster, lower air flow, seat heating or menu) when the car's in standby state.
I just hit the fan button when I'm waiting in the car and want it to stay warm. It shuts off when I open the door and lock it though. But it works great if I'm picking somebody up or getting gas (we can't pump our own in nj and that's fine with me ) Or: Car>settings>climate control>pre-ventilation>activate now. Or: You can use your remote control or the app and remote start to get it warm. Check out the drive guide under "stationary climate control"

Unless things have changed with the G series...the setting above on the E & F series only worked when temps were approximately ABOVE 59° F and is used mainly to ventilate the car when it is ambient temps are warm by turning on the blower to bring the temp inside the cabin down.
The REST feature (as mentioned) runs the blower but the residual heat from the engine is used to keep the cabin warm...and one of the criteria is that the temps have to be cooler (like below 59° F). Don't hold the 59° F as a a rock solid rule...I believe the F series may have changed the actual temp/degree that the REST feature and VENTILATE features can be activated. But the concept is that REST uses the residual heat from the engine when it is cool to keep the cabin warm...and the VENTILATE feature uses the blower to blow ambient air into the cabin to cool it down.

In previous BMW's if you hit the REST button and the temp was above a certain temp, it just wouldn't activate, pretty much like you said. To move air around on a hot day, you'd use the old (& pretty useless) "parked car ventilation" to turn the fan on and blow around the hot air. In this one, if you hit the fan switch and it's below a certain temp you'll get residual heat and when it's hot out you'll get the fan blowing air around.

Thanks for the thoughts...I've tried the suggestions above and so far, it seems like the RES function has substantially changed. It seems like hitting the buttons mentioned will kick it on if you're sitting in it, but as soon as you lock it, it seems to turn off. If you activate the Preconditioning, then it starts the vehicle. (In the F15/16, the fan would keep running until you either hit the fan button again to shut if off or after a period of time, which was about 10 minutes.)
I loved using the RES feature on cold days when I'm running errands. It would keep the vehicle much warmer, when turned off, if you were just stepping away for something like 20 minutes. |

If I'm sitting in my car, I just hit the fan switch to keep warm. If I'm going grocery shopping or something like that, I just set the precondition timer (auto start) right before I get in line to check out.

Like you I’m a long time BMW owner who likes to know everything about how things on my car operate. This one, everything is different and came with a huge learning curve. It’s all there plus more, but you’ve got to find it and learn the new way things work
