To tint, or not to tint ...

My 2021 X5 M50i is off the production line and waiting for me in Spartanburg. Woot! Woot!

I went with the Tanzanite Blue II Metallic and the 22" M Double-spoke black wheels. I also ordered the extended Shadowline trim. So now I'm thinking about tinting. I have a few questions for you kind folks.

Do any of you know the VLT % of the rear sides and back window? I hear that the X5 arrives with tinting? Is it 30% or 35%?

I'm told to tint the moonroof, as well. Thoughts?

I hear that 3M Ceramic LR is about the best tint available. Do any of you have recommendations?

Thanks much!

I just made an appointment to have my 2021 45e tinted and the shop I use indicated they would need to see the car and measure the rear tint before determining what level of tint to use on the fronts to match the back. According to them, the X5s come with different levels of tint (between 20-30 or 35% iirc) on the rear, not sure if that's true or not...

FWIW, I'm going to go with Formula One Pinnacle Ceramic tint on the fronts only (to match the rear) and not doing the moonroof or windshield.

Congrats on your soon-to-be-delivered M50i! Good luck on the tinting!!

Thanks for the tips. I live in Virginia and the law here is 35% for rear and rear sides and no less than 50% on the front sides. Definitely, no tinting on the windshield. I'll check on the Formula One Pinnacle Ceramic tinting.

Cheers!

My tint guy told me my rears were 20% so I had my front two to match. I also had my windshield done (first time ever). I must say at 50%, it's noticeable but not too dark...and I love it!

I measured the rears at 16% on mines. I have xpel tints on mine all around and love them.
I previously had suntek and there's a noticable difference those and the xpel.

What did you end up using for tint? Any pictures you can post? I have this same build in process w/ Ivory leather and I want to know what you think about the sunroof tint. I would love to see this blue w/ tint also.

We just took possession of our 2021 Arctic grey X5. We decided on the Pinnacle Ceramic tint on the fronts only 30%. It looks fantastic and not too dark.

Tinting the front windshield -
Any ideas how to get around the issue of some states/clubs/HOA's having front windshield stickers on the inside - especially states inspections that need to be updated yearly? Any thoughts on getting around that?

look into a near transparent ceramic tint like air 80 or stratos 70. you can't tell the windshield is tinted. it rejects most of the heat.

My local tint shop had a meter and tested my back factory glass and it was 18%. We put 20% film on the two front door windows and it's almost a perfect match.

My car shop where I have installed clear bra told me that they have returning customers every week who pay to remove tint due to the police tickets. I wonder how often people are getting tickets for that? I see many cars around who are driving with tinted windows.

I would think as long as the tint level is within your area's regulations, police shouldn't ticket indiscriminately. If that's what's happening in your area, that sucks. For the most part over here, if police suspect the level is darker than allowed, then they can pull us over to check and write a citation if illegal or let us go if not.

It all depends on your area and your police. Its a very subjective area for ticketing, some enforce more than others. Also depends if its considered a primary violation vs secondary, meaning they can pull you over primarily for your tint and ticket you for it vs they have to pull you over for something else (speeding, failing to stop, etc) and then can ticket you for your tint.

Agree, a couple years ago i got 5 tickets in one shot at time square for tinted windows (one ticket for each windows).
They were just sitting there pulling anyone over with tints. The officer told me he was in good mood, or I would've gotten two more for the two tiny windows on the rear.
