Navigation Maps Update?

When do the navigation maps update? Is there a way to force an update?

No way to force an update that I am aware (for free), but normally you should get 2-3 updates per year. iDrive will notify you each time an update is received.

I just got a message last night " map update complete" 2021 X6M 11/2020.36

I got a popup saying map update complete. Do not recall what the earlier version was. MY2021, just completed one month from the vehicle delivery.

You will receive an update to your home region map three or four times a year. If you spend time in other regions (it seems at least 8 hours) then you should get an update for that region, at some of us have had that happen. Below is a list of the regions as well as an example that a member posted of his updated regions.

My 2021 X5M was built in 11/2020 and had Region 1 maps for 2020-3. About 3 weeks ago, it updated Region 1 to 2020-4.

Say you tell the vehicle to plan a route to a place outside of the normal area you drive, will that force an update to that area in your vehicle or will it wait until you actually enter an area that isn't currently updated? Corollary question, does the vehicle have a base map of the entire market (say, US, Canada for US sales, or maybe all of Europe for vehicles sold there, but only update the area you are currently in?).

Curious...I may tell it I'm planning to go cross-country and see what it does.

No, that has not done it in the past and neither does changing your regions on the ConnectedDrive account. You had to physically been in the region for some time before an update and some reported that they didn't even get one then.

At least for the US/Canada, the base map is the compilation of the regions listed above.
