wheel spacer recommendation (offset clarification)
i'm converting from 21" staggered setup (OEM 741M wheels) to 20" square setup (MSW type 48 wheels) for several reasons.
due to the change in the rear setup (MSW wheel is ET 30mm), the outer sidewall of the new rear tire recedes 13mm inward the wheel well/fender (the front sidewall is in the same position even with the change). is it recommended to install rear wheel spacers to replicate the OEM stance width or do i leave it alone? if recommended, what size spacer (12mm, 15mm)? does this add any stress to the wheel, hub, axle, suspension of any sort? FYI, with my OEM 21" staggered, the rear sidewall sits 0.8" wider than the front sidewall. i'm also looking at Beyern Ritz wheels 20x9 ET 25mm or 20x10 ET 39mm (these are their only 20" 5x112 bolt patterns and their available offsets). with the 20x9, the front sidewall comes out 0.47" while the rear sidewall goes in 0.33". with the 20x10, the front sidewall comes out 0.08" while the rear sidewall goes in 0.88". with either wheel, the front and rear sidewalls become even with each other. should i keep them as is or add 20 mm rear spacers to regain the OEM stance width? thoughts on spacers? thoughts on wheels? It depends on the wheel's offset. If it varies from the OEM one to move it out, yes, you'll have a longer lever to affect the bearings. Now, is it a big deal, depends. Spacers were developed to make a non-OEM wheel fit so you have the proper clearances both inside and outside.
You don't want the outside of the wheel to be outside of the fender well or hit anything at the suspension limits and on the front, when turning (well, the rear, if you have rear wheel steering, too). |

How have the MSW 48 wheels worked out for you? I'm looking at that same setup now.
