DIY Wireless Charger Install (not OEM) (2022 X5 45e)

For those that didn't get the OEM wireless charger...maybe this will help. This post will have a lot of photos. I decided to install my own wireless charger since I couldn't get the OEM one due to the parts shortages. I decided I wanted the charger to be in the area where the OEM charger is. I don't really care that I might be blocking the digital key card area. I've been wanting to try working with some walnut so I picked up a small piece from the local hardwood store and designed roughly what I had in mind on a piece of scrap paper and then spent a couple days crafting the phone holder with embedded wireless charger. I'm sure you could just buy something similar and toss it in there but I wanted to create something a bit sleek. One issue is that it won't hold a large phone with an otterbox but it's not much of an issue for me right now as I enjoy smaller phones.

Install Sequence (this took about 6 hours for my install):
1. Move both front seats all the way down and back for access to center console T20 screw access. Also retract the thigh extenders.
2. Disconnect the main 12v battery only. If it's a PHEV you may need to wait until the car goes to sleep for power to be cut from the car entirely.
3. Begin disassembly. The T20 screws in this car are torqued pretty high so make sure you have a good T20 driver and a straight shot at the screws.
4. Follow the disassembly instructions from the TIS guide. I found it over here.
5. 12v socket wiring:
a. Red w/ Green Stripe wire is hot
b. Brown wire is ground
c. Yellow/Green wire is for LED
6. Plan your wiring path, route the wires in place, and make your connections. I planned it out so the USB connection and fuse holder are accessible by simply removing the console side carpet on the passenger side.
Reassemble everything and enjoy. Good luck!

Really great writeup , thanks for taking the time to put it all together.

While I do like what you made , would we simply be able to source the OEM parts separately and retrofit after taking delivery?

Perhaps. I'm not remotely anyone who could speak about this with any accuracy. Someone around here mentioned the OEM charger part was pretty expensive but I don't know myself. Further I would think there could be some complications with swapping the digital key pad out but again I don't know.

Upon reading the schematics, the NFC Digital Key pad and the Wireless Charging NFC Digital key pad are wired the same, save for the LTE compensator for "extended" cellular coverage.

Therefore it is mainly plug and play to swap out the NFC pad for the Wireless charging pad with NFC, save for coding it with 6NW if you needed the "forgot device" notification. Wiring would only be involved if your vehicle had 32Z - Digital Key Deletion, since there wouldn't be a NFC pad there at all.

This is GREAT info , thanks for providing.

Now, to see if the Wireless Charging NFC digital key pad is an available part number..

I took apart my console to remove the wireless charging pad. It's all integrated with the NFC and Booster.

Nice find. Odd that it covers up the right hand side storage pocket but still looks like a simple upgrade.

FWIW, I posted up a solution that is a little simpler, though not as clean an install, here - https://g05.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh....php?t=1864111

after having mine installed awhile now I can report I've had some issues with what I'm guessing is heat build up on longer trips. of course using wireless AA seems to put a tax on my phone and I've noticed it hasn't been able to keep the phone charged up either. I think the wireless connection gets weak or something as the sound starts dropping out. cycling wifi seems to solve it but not sure for how long. could be a wifi signal strength issue leading to all of this heat and problems so this could be something that acts different device to device. Galaxy S10e is my current poison.

I have an S20. I do have the wireless charging pad but I commute with wired fast charging. For long trips we will have two phones plugged in and fast charging. No need to move the phone while driving so this seems the best solution

Is this connector identical to the one where you only have NFC or do you think you nee to reroute the power from somewhere?

I don't know for sure but I suspect the connector is not different for the two options. The wiring would likely include both power and communication signals

Old thread, I know.
But OP, with tools you have, you should be able to integrate few air channels around charging pad and install small 30mm x 30mm fan on the back of the timber frame, to push air thru.
All you need to do, is just push some air between wireless charger and phone to keep it cool. Custom wiring kit can be ordered with this wire harness manufacturer company in China, they are subcontractors to OEM automotive sector.
