I've been switching out square winter and staggered summer sets for years and never had an alignment issue.

I think your dealer is BSing you. As far as I know, I've never needed an alignment after the winters were installed, and I get them installed by my dealer.

Anyone else switch yet? I put on the winter shoes this morning. I probably could have waited a bit longer but forecasts started showing temps in the mid to low 40s overnight so I thought I'd get it done.

Ha, you are earlier than me (also in NYC but upstate on weekends). Checking the weather though. Will wait for it to warm up Sunday and Monday before heading out anywhere - lows around 40 upstate NY, but then jumping back up 10 degrees for the week so we should be fine for another week or so.

Just a head's up to anyone still in the market... the 22" rears are out of stock in most places. The only way to find them is through certain dealers or at Porsche. I mentioned on here back in the middle of summer that there would be limited supply and I hope those who need took advantage. I suspect the wheel/tire winter combos in smaller sizes will be sold out soon so if you haven't purchased or cannot find the 22" in stock then start exploring options before you do not have any.

With a lease I don't see the point in spending the extra 3k on a full set of wheels / tires even though I'd prefer the Alpin 5's. I just ordered the scorpion winters for 1750 for the entire set up. |

I put on my Scorpions winters (on oem wheels) earlier this week. Definitely sacrifice some high speed performance, but man the traction on wet roads is amazing. Went through some deep puddles at highway (100-110kph) speeds and didn't even get the hydroplaning / resistance on the one side that entered the puddle. Dry performance isn't as great as the MP4S*'s but that's no surprise. Can't wait for snow & ice to properly try them…

I'm waiting...I'm in NJ, similar weather to NY, but it will be in the 60s next week. It's been below 40 in the mornings, but the temps warm up quickly. I usually wait until mid-December; I've never swapped them out in November before.

I used the Scorpion Winters on my OEM wheels last winter. While not the ideal size for snow tires the set up worked great. No issues at all driving in any winter conditions.
Unfortunately at the end of the season I noticed that I must have ran over a piece of metal and sliced one of the rear tires. It was still holding air but wasn't comfortable with using it again so I knew I needed to replace the tire. I searched for weeks for one rear tire (315/30/22) with no luck and finally called my dealer to bite the bullet and buy BMW's winter set up. I mentioned to the parts guy what had happened and that I was aggravated that I needed to buy a whole set of wheels/tires because I couldn't find one rear tire. He asked which tire it was and said he could get it for me in a couple days. I figured he "thought" he could get it and would strike out when he actually tried to place the order but I spoke with him yesterday and he said the tire came in and he had it waiting for me to go pick it up! I'm pretty psyched that I avoided spending the $4k+ on the winter set up but also a little shocked that the price of one Scorpion Winter went up to $605! Oh well, going to grab it today and should be all set for the winter now. |
