M50i Break-in

Curious how everyone is driving/handling their break-in period. Are you limiting top speed, keeping it under the 4,500rpm at all times, etc.... For most part and in general have kept it normal speeds and under 4,500rpm or just about that mark. Occasionally instance where have pinged it above that but rarely

I had a red X5 50 back in 2012.
Bought it used from Manhattan BMW. There were real horror stories with N63 that year of timing belt (or chain -i'm not a mechanic) ripping off the engine.
My BMW did go through "voluntary recall"...but i was so afraid that traded it in for F16 with less powerful engine. Regretting the move since then. No power whatsoever. Nothing compares to that notorious bad-ass N63.

In any case, the engine in your car is not the one i had in my 2021.
They relocated both turbos and did a bunch of other stuff...but would really want to hear back from people with N63B44T3 2019+ about their experience.
"Oil hunger" and anything alike...

Anyways, not an authoritative answer whatsoever, but please take care of this engine. It's very delicate. LOL

Yeah, I did really try to observe the full 1200 mile break-in period, and then paid out of pocket for an extra oil and filter change, and rear differential change, at 1200 miles.

For the first 1200 break-in miles I’ve been avoiding highway speeds as well as constant speeds. In addition I’ve avoided heavy stomping on the brakes.
Driving around town to vary the speed and rpms but It’s so tempting to get on the gas.
I’ve always had this question. If you can’t maintain constant speeds which means highways, how do people who do performance center deliveries get their cars home?
Is it not recommended to drive at highway speeds during break-in?

According to BMW, the official break-in stance says up to 1,200 miles 4,500rpm/100mph avoid full load and kickdown... 1200+ gradually increase speeds...

I'm still doing my drive home from my PCD. (see link in my sig)

I did drive a lot of highways during break-in. But did not use cruise control. Varied speed and engine RPM.

This meant drive at 50 mph for a while, speed up to 60 mph for a bit, slow to 55 mpph, etc.

Or manually change gears at a given speed it's rpm variation not mph

Also break in is a very old concept and has little real applicability anymore. Watch them Rev new engines to max before install and ask again why break in miles are a thing anymore machine tolerances are not that of the 50s and speed of part movement and fit are such that the whole concept is simply not relevant. You can even find articles suggesting that the only break in in a modern engine occurs in the first few minutes and it's seating the rings

Lol when I picked mine up I stayed below 4500 but drove around 120mph on the way home.. autobahn. I have been driving like I stole it after the 1200 miles and just did a dyno no hp lost 534hp at 35,000 km

95% of the time kept it under 4,500 and varied speed..... few time redline, like less than a handful, it couldn't be helped

Curious how much did you pay for that "out of pocket" break in service?

I had the exact same question - I picked up my M50i in May and asked the SA this exact question, if the 4500 rpm/100 mph limits were applicable, and he laughed and said "nah, today's modern engines don't really have break in periods anymore, enjoy that beast." I thought that was odd based on all the information here so I still adhered to the break in period, but on mile 1,201 I let her rip!

Now I'm at 5,500 miles and searching threads to figure out if I should change the oil and diff fluid...

It won’t hurt to change it but likely a waste of money. The true M cars (X5M and X6M) actually have different fluids installed from the factory for break-in purposes. They cannot stay in much past 1200 miles w/o causing damage. The M50i just has the standard fluids so it doesn’t really require it.

Diff fluid, I won’t do it. Engine oil, yes I would do it at 5000 miles. The cost for me is very low because it will s such a simple DIY. I will also send sample for analysis to see if I can go for longer. But I do keep my car for a long time, 20 years coming up for my oldest bmw. So I walk in cautious side
