Replaced my 30D with a 40i
I've been a big advocate for my 30D Diesel, but I've just replace my 2019 30D with a 2021 40i, and WOW what a car and what a motor.
I didn't mind the 30D, it had heaps of power, low down torque, and was very fuel efficient, but the 40i motor is absolutely magic - as smooth as butter when pushed gently, but an absolute "animal" when pushed hard - especially in Sports Plus mode. I haven't pushed her that hard yet because I'm still in the run-in period, but I have revved it to 4500-5000 and love that sound ! My new ride has the full M Sports package with M Sport Exhaust, Red M Sport brakes along with 22" 742 M Bicolour jet black rims with plain vanilla Adaptive M Suspension. The interior is Black with Carbon Fibre trim which I think looks awesome. Two important things I think are worth mentioning: 1 - I've been driving it for almost a week now, and I am fully convinced the 22" 742 wheels provide a softer ride than the 20" 740M wheels I had on my 2019 30D. The 22" tyres are Contis non run-flats, while my old 20" were Bridgestone Alenza run-flats. Seriously the difference is day & night. They are definitely a little noisier on the highway (but in a very subtle way), while at normal street speeds the noise is negligible - the same as the 20". I was initially VERY worried about going to 22" wheels after hearing from some drive journos whining about how hard the 22" makes the ride - but no such experience for me... Anyone considering the 22", my advice GO FOR IT ! ..you wont be disappointed. 2- I changed from Diesel to Petrol (Gas) because almost ALL of my driving these days is now short distances, and with COVID I'll only be going into the office once or twice a week max. I only tow half a dozen times a year, and the 40i and the 450Nm is plenty for my small boat. I plan on keeping this through to the end of the decade (~10-12 years), and selling or trading in a petrol motor after 2030 will be a lot easier than trying to trade in a Diesel powered car... Here's a few pics... Last edited by James_G0540i; 10-26-2021 at 05:16 AM.. |

Congrats and very nice looking. The carbon fibre trim is stunning
I can just confirm what you are saying regarding the 22, had the same 22 on a 30d but different tires and no problem with the ride comfort, albeit I had air suspension front and rear. I now have 21 on a 45e and I cant say they are more quiet either. Both cars with double glass. I think the noice level is more dependent on the tires as you point out and the surface your driving on as oppsed to 20,21, 22. Only downside of the 22 is that they take longer to clean as there are a lot of spokes, the 21 Y-spokes are easier. Enjoy your new car! |

Wow she's a beauty!! I absolutely agree with you on the 22s! How is the performance exhaust sound?? Love how you're able to chose the carbon fiber for the 40i

First, congrats on the purchase!

Not that I don't believe you, but it's hard to imagine that a 22" wheel is as comfortable as a 20" wheel on the same vehicle. |

I have the same Continentals on my ride...and the noise gets irritating at times. However, i think much of the noise (or lack thereof) really depends on the surface composition you're driving on.
I noticed a substantially quieter ride when i'm driving at highway speeds over asphalt versus when the road material is more concrete in nature. In the latter scenario...the noise coming through the cabin is reminiscent of the sound a rubber kick ball makes when kicked (that "boooinng" sound) but just never ending...a hollow, rubber ball sound...which i suppose...is exactly what those tires are The other drawback for me is that these are summer tires...and given that i live in a very mild climate (Los Angeles) buying a set of winter tires makes zero sense for me. However, with these summers...i unfortunately really can't take this car up to the snow...so we'll still likely drive up (once a year) in my 2013 328 |

Nice ride. I've been tempted to do the same but I still a high mileage so will stick with the 3.0d for now. I've got the 22" 742 rims on my diesel and love them. I had years of RFTs on previous BMW and was a little worried about not having a spare. After 2.5 years I've just bought a cheap Chinese emergency spare wheel kit for £185. Clearly it is not a patch on the oem emergency spare but it will be sufficient to get me to a tyre depot and better than using the emergency repair kit

Looks absolutely stunning - congratulations! Carbon interior with black seats is possibly the best combination.
Pleased to hear the 22s are proving the right choice and no problems with the ride. Non run flats make a huge difference, plus the advancements in adaptive settings. Enjoy that peach of a motor. Nothing like the smooth power of a BMW inline 6-cylinder petrol engine. |

I had the exact same Adaptive M Suspension on my previous 30D, and I was always surprised how rough the ride was on the 20" RFTs, even in Comfort mode. With the new ride, I find the overall feel "more compliant" and it just seems less jarring and able to absorb road anomalies better. It is hard to explain... Maybe the previous car had different or harder springs in the Adaptive M suspension setup, or maybe the 22" wider tyres are able to better absorb road undulations and potholes better.... |

Personally, I don't see the appeal of big wheels...cost more, tires cost more, tend to wear out sooner, more susceptible to damage to both the tire and the wheels, and I can't see them while driving it. The taller tire sidewalls do ride better, and the thing seems to handle fine. In the bay area, you may not encounter snow, but if you wanted to go skiing, you'd need to purchase either some winter tires, or all-weather ones, adding yet more costs, or, drive something else.

Great move imo - same reasons I chose the 40i (coming from an E70 35D).
And also echo your sentiments re the wheels - I did quick back to back test drives of the 22 vs 21 and didn't notice any detriment with the 22s, so went them because they look great lol You now have the option of swapping out your downpipe. I went the CG DS-1 - adds a nice rumble to the exhaust note! |

Beautiful color combo! Congratulations. I went for the 40i as well after owning several N62 4.4L BMW's and this reminds me a lot of my old E39 528i, smoothest car I've driven.
One question though, since when is the HVAC control display orange? Does this also have to do with the "shortages" or the fact that you're in a different region than me for example? Mine is white with a few colors. |

My theory on the power is that they detuned the peak HP but added more usable torque. But that is purely speculation. |

I didn't compare the tires back to back like you've been able to do but I did look at the cost difference between the 20" RF and the 22" non=RF and it worked out about $200 difference for a full set. And given the 22's came in the equipment pack I wanted (for the exhaust) it was a no-brainer. |

I would argue, from my amateur opinion, that the x5 could do with more torque, particularly down low. What I find interesting, and I'm sure someone more technical than me could comment, is that the turbo on the 140 is very subtle and you have to go searching a bit for it on normal driving, but with the x5 it seems to be always be noticeable - at least you can almost always hear it.. |
