1200 Mile Break-in service

Hi All,

Just curious on the 1200 mile break-in service - my understanding is they change the diff fluids. Do you also get an oil change during this service? Anything else to be aware of - ? TIA.

Oil change is part of the break in service.

As mentioned, they change the oil, oil filter and the rear differential fluid.

They also unlock launch control for cars that are automatic which is the only scenario is our case. They also can run an update if its deemed necessary from the factory.

Does the exhaust note sound any different after the 1,200 service? I just picked up my X5M and was surprised on how relatively subdued the exhaust note is especially on down shifts. I have an m340xi as well and think it actually sounds better going from 2nd to 3rd gear and on the down shifts.

Didn't notice a sound increase.

I've heard this is folklore - will try to verify when I go.

My F85 X5M, F90 M5 and F97 X3MC all had Launch Control active at 1 mile.

I didn't say increase in power, I said launch control is activated and software update is performed. is necessary.

I know. I am referring to what you said about activating launch control.

Exactly. It says so in the technical training papers on the F95/96.

Are the training docs available online like the F85, F90, etc ?

Interestingly enough, I finally found documentation today (https://www.bmw-m.com/en/fastlane/dr...s-package.html) that appears to suggest that there is a speed limiter removal on some models at the break-in completion.

Does anyone know more about this or perhaps why it doesn't apply to the X5M, per their specific note?

Is this perhaps EU specific documentation? (Seems odd, but possible)

I just picked up my x5mc last night. Love it. On the subject of break in. They told me about the 1200 mile break in oil and diff change which I already knew about from here but he did mention to keep the revs under 3k rpm? For 1200 miles? That sounded like alot to me. I would think the first 500 maybe? Any truth to this or anything in the OM regarding this? I haven’t had time to sit down and read the OM just yet and probably won’t for a while. I don’t remember hearing anything like that when I had my x7 m50i I just traded out of. Thoughts?

rpm recommendation seems low but check your manual. for the G05, it recommends keeping rpm under 4500 during break-in. I would think the F95 is similar or even a bit higher.

1200-mile break-in seems across the board for many bimmers. that's what it is for my G05 and my wife's G30 (same rpm limit too)

I know you asked for these a while ago but I just noticed when reviewing this thread.

They are usually stickied under the vehicle specific forums. The F90 one is found here https://f90.bimmerpost.com/forums/at...2&d=1530151323

I was told when I also picked up my new 2023 this week to keep it under 4500 rpm. They also said to not stick at a constant rpm for long periods if driving on the highway. They said to downshift or give some throttle to vary the rpm periodically. Hope that helps some.

3000 rpm seems artificially low IMO…

That’s what I thought as well. 4500 seems to make a lot more sense.

When they change the diff fluid, my understanding is that they analyze the old fluid for metal flakes. The presence of metal flakes indicates a diff issue.
