Percent off MSRP of in stock vs. ordering
I'm looking at a X5 X40i build pretty loaded but not seeing any at any dealership in New England. I should be able to negotiate on a vehicle that's on the lot but what about ordering one? Any room there in New England on X5's?

Generally the discount is the same whether you are buying off the lot or ordering. Some dealers may give a little more on in-stock vehicles at certain times and some others give a little more on orders since it is less expensive for them.

8-8.5% is the norm i see being mentioned by members here. Ive seen as high as 10% from a few posts. I myself got 8.5% using a broker, give me an effective 8% after broker fees. Not bad considering its a local dealer to me, and i didnt have to talk to anyone until its time to confirm order and again on pickup day. Ordered on 1st week of december and picked up on last week of january. Maybe you can get a better discount for some in-stock units considering 2025's are coming to their lots?

IMO, here’s your challenge….first, allocations for MY ‘24 are done. Allocations for MY ‘25 should be released around 1 March. For a while Dealers will be reluctant to substantially discount orders for the new model year. I’d guess 6 to 8 weeks after SOP we will see a return to 5–8% dealer discounts. V8s, X6 and the 50e will be in short supply. All of which is a best guesstimate on my part.

I took 9% off MSRP. Took delivery 3 days back. I am from Texas and if you want can guide the dealerships where I negotiated (4 of them). So you definitely can try 8-9%
One of them was giving 9% on order too because they didn’t have the color in stock. |

I would start at 10% and see if you can get 6-8% off.

Just my observation over the years, if dealers have slow moving inventories, typical measured by number of days of supply, they will offer more discounts for existing inventories. Because every day the cars sit on dealers lots, this cost dealer money. If car is hot, they cannot keep a inventory, then ordered car will have more discount. Thr former is more like now. Thr laster was back in 2021/2022 where cars are in short supply.

Looking to order one too—this feedback is helpful. Do you think there is a chance to get a good discount on your own or do you basically have to go through a broker?

Hopefully someone from the UK chimes is as the situation may be a lot different there than in the US. If I remember correctly there is a buying service/broker/something similar that many folks use.

I’m terrible at negotiation and local dealer is selling everything they can get their hands on so they weren’t interested in discounting much at all, as recommended went through Dan and got 9% (in addition to the 4k military discount from BMW direct). I’ll be taking PCD delivery in SC next week. You should check with Dan but I wouldn’t expect 9% on a new 2025 for a few months but I bet he could still get you a very good deal.
