Lean code and cyl 2&3 misfire
This just happened after a rainstorm. Both banks coded lean and 2& 3 are misfiring. Anyone had a similar problem?

Miles?
Modifications? What was recently done to the vehicle? How old are your spark plugs? I would clear codes and see if they come back, first. |

Thanks Jeff, I should know better - one can't give enough info.
Plugs have about 5,000, 46,000 on the engine, 6,000 on the oil, nothing recent done to it and mods are Vishnu, DCI, tires, wheels, subframe bushings and FSD's. I've noticed an occasional hiccup when it was cold but this was much worse. Drove it home through rain, snow and sleet and it wasn't up to par. Drove it today and it felt pretty much normal. My driving is mostly high speed highway with very little wot. I do have a fair amount of rattle from the turbo's but it isn't too bad yet. My first thought was another fuel pump, my second was bad gas ( I'd just filled up and driven about 3 miles before parking it, then driving it after a hail/rain storm). SES light is on and I'll leave the codes in for the tech to verify. I suspect they will not reappear soon if I clear them. Nothing obvious in the engine room. Tomorrow's going to be dry so I'll drive it and bring it in early this week. |

The dealer informed me that I needed all 6 injectors replaced.
From what I'm reading in other posts here this would be the 079 version and would be at least the forth version of this part. It appears BMW and Bosch have a problem here that they don't want to admit to. I've had BMW's for 28 years and never had an injector failure. I would think the MTBF for this part would be well in excess of the less than 50K I have on my car. So, how hard is it to DIY on these parts? Last edited by ZBMW; 05-18-2013 at 04:51 PM.. |

I did check in the DIY posts and found the one that has the software (INPA), some pretty good pictures and explanation of how to R&R each injector and code them. It also requires a $99 cable to link a laptop to the car. I'm probably not near to anyone who has done this (Rocky Mountain Chapter) but if anyone is near Monument and has the equipment I'd be willing to give it a shot.
The big cost though is injectors and connectors. And it's obvious that BMW has had more than a few problems with these puppies. |

Car is back from the dealer with a new set of injectors and it definitely is smoother running.
I guess because of my low mileage BMW paid for half the cost of parts, which was really great of them since labor is the smaller part of the cost. Hopefully, I can look forward to a lot of untroubled miles. I'm also going to keep an eye on gas consumption to see if it improves. But, what with running highways miles in dense traffic, 29mpg in summer is tough to beat. |
