Seriously he needs to take that crap to YouTube. Only 4 posts and all negative trolling. There should be a troll stat next to rep so we can point out obvious trollers.

I unsubscribed to this thread because of stupid stuff I've been reading. I don't mind opinions, I actually welcome them but keep it to the subject.

So my response would have more weight if I had 500 posts?
The glass knob is tacky and a copy of the Volvo Crystal. The Crystal is more so relevant because of the manufacturers history in Sweden. The glass on the other hand can be best associated with cubic zirconia. Upscale it is not.
I for one don’t like something just because the BMW name is behind it. There are quite a few people on this forum who exaggerate the brand even past putting it on a pedestal and the glass knob is just one example.

Yes, and actual X5 ownership experience. More thread counts and rep points mean you participate and have added valuable content. Opinions don’t really mean anything without that on a BMW forum. Sniping at every thread kinda makes you a troll since you started.
On topic: Yes, they make quality crystal all around the world. Since BMW and Rolls Royce are under the same ownership and share similar glass/crystal applications with their latest design options, I don’t think Volvo is really relevant to their design teams. The crystal trend will only grow in high end manufactures much like quilted leather seats.

I don't need to give you a detailed response since others already have. Maybe you you owned a current BMW with the crystal and idrive 7 you'd have more credibility.

I know it’s hard to believe but some people are private and don’t post pics of everything they own and don’t have a signature with every car they have owned to claim forum “credibility”. Mind blowing isnt it?
This is me with 5 posts or 500.

Replacing the standard to glass controls is going to be excruciatingly more expensive after the fact since you'll have replace the entire shifter/iDrive control unit in the center tunnel.

Check the status of production order, if it's not status 150, Production Started, you can have your dealer modify.
I think the dealer can't modify or rather they can put in the request but 99.99% of the times it doesn't get picked up by the factory. It then is best to have the dealer cancel that build or let it be and place a new hold order. This is out of my experience that I am saying but I could be wrong.

I agree. I would also be concerned that they would look scratched and crappy dirty in a short period of time.

Next car I’ll ask to see them on a car before I decide, but my gut is that they aren’t worth it.

I had all kinds of angst when I ordered mine also. I ordered on a Monday, with a trailer hitch. But since we have hitches on all of our other cars, I changed my mind. On Friday I asked the dealer to change it, and he said that was my last day to make changes - four days after ordering.

Unless you have a similar situation, I think you should trust your gut. I ordered mine knowing NOTHING about the car. If you made a more deliberate decision, might be best to stick with it.

I couldn't disagree more. The glass controls take the futurustic and premium feel of the interior up a notch. The shifter looks like it came straight out of a Ridley Scott film.

It's also the most visually interesting thing in the center stack and naturally one of the first things that passengers look at when getting in for the first time. They are an optical trip if you move as you look at it. The two pictures of the start button from different angles below shows a bit of this.

To each their own, but I would definitely miss this eyecandy.

I agree. Having crystal integrated into the interior makeup of the vehicle is a nice touch.

I like mine. I don’t get many passengers to show it off to though.

I've really enjoyed having mine. One concern I had early on was that there would be too much glare due to sunlight. However, what I've found is that, since I tend to rest my hand on the shifter while driving, it covers it up so as to eliminate any glare issues.

I also have gotten quite a few compliments on the shifter from friends/family. They all immediately gravitate to it and especially to the X inside. I think it was worth it.

So how easy is the crystal to scratch or crack? I am somewhat clumsy and would be worried about banging it with my purse when I get in, or my water cup (it's TX, too hot and ice water is necessary 7+ months of the year). I do think they look nice, but wouldn't be upset not to have them.

It's actual crystal, so you'd have to have a metal that is harder than the glass, and a sharp edge at that. I'd guess that diamonds are likely the biggest worry, but rings would generally be away from the glass.

While I loved the knob my wife hated the iDrive dial, which was enough for us to not get them. I don't care either way TBH. I actually dig the matte feel on the touch pad.

My wife was the same way, she didn't like any of the glass features. Didn't get it this time but hopefully I can change her mind in three years.
