In the past when motor oil is changed, I've sometimes asked the person doing the change or flush to siphon off a quantity to send to a lab like Blackstone for analysis. I was curious whether anybody has done this for a M car break-in service (the 1,200 mile one...) and had opinions on whether it is instructive or informative in any way.

This is a tough question. My first thought would be "why bother?" because you know it is going to show all sorts of residue from the break-in process. But I then decided to do a quick google search to see in general what people think.

I read a post on an unrelated site that gave food for thought. While the data by themselves may not be that useful, it does provide a baseline for comparing subsequent readings.

I would do it.

So, I went ahead and requested an analysis of the break-in fluid. Here's what I received back--posting here for reference if others do the same.

Note, in the narrative commentary (not posted here but I can if requested) they referenced that they were comparing these results to S63 engines.

Thanks for sharing. Looks like oil change isn’t necessary at least by the way your finish that 1200miles.

Personally, I won’t bother for the 1200 miles. What can we do based in the finding, right? The oil change is as short as it can be already. Engine cannot be bad at this mileage either. In the past, where dip stick still exist, I will suck out sample for black stone at say 5000, top off and wait for result to see if I should do oil change. My conclusion was 7500 mile for M54 and S62. 5000 for N54. These are my cars. Nowadays without dip stick, getting sample without oil change isn’t as simple

I may be misunderstanding your post, but my vehicle required an oil change at 1200 miles and I understand it had a special fluid in the motor, which is why I posted these results.

Yes. Understood. Just merely saying the reading from oil analysis says if oil is brand new, no meaningful metal wear off. I do agree the initial oil is different, Molybdenum is non existent. Maybe this is the reason M cars need 1200 oil change and M60i doesn’t despite engine is the same.
