X6 40i M Sport Brakes vs Non

For those without the M sport brakes, how is it? Is it too soft or adequate?

Considering how heavy the x6 is, would be nice if it came standard.

Anyone get a chance to try out both?

Never tried non-M-Sport brakes but the M-Sport brakes are more than adequate I would say. My pre-LCI 40i is tuned now and is much quicker than stock (0-60 timed at 4.2s) and the brakes still inspire confidence in fast road use.

Where they would be inadequate is on a track but I doubt many people are tracking a 40i SUV.

I have the (red) M sport brakes (S3M2 code) and they are excellent. However I suspect performance will be the same regardless. Mine give me confidence and look great. I went for looks on this one. Can’t compare with the standard (blue) ones.

I’m curious, what is the technical difference between the M-sport and standard brake on the X5/X6? I just went and looked and my standard brake appears to be a 4-piston fixed caliper design. Does M-sport get you a larger rotor and better pad compound?

Generally speaking though, in initial braking, the quality of your tires is going to impact your stopping distance the most. Antilock braking systems are already applying the maximum amount of braking force, and the rest depends on how sticky and wide the rubber contact patch is on your tires.

Where a sport brake comes into play is when you’re doing repetitive hard braking or very high speed braking because the larger rotor, extra pistons and pad compound is more resistant to heat which prevents fade. So if you’re just a regular person driving your X5 on public roads in a regular way, with rare instances of emergency braking to avoid an accident, it’s doubtful you will ever know the difference between m-sport and normal brakes.

Everyone knows that the red/blue calipers add 100hp, so there's that.

Please use search function next time, this has been discussed in many thread over and over; info is available on the first sticky post of the forum "G05/G06 Technical Training documents" in 02_G05 Powertrain-Chassis.pdf

Red and blue are the same system.

The non-coloured system is where you find differences.

Same here. Got the red brakes only for aesthetics. I'm sure the performance of standard brakes would be sufficient for every day use.

In the picture you posted, what I don’t understand is who gets the Type-A brake for the front axle? It says Type-B is optional, but I didn’t option it, and it came standard on my LCI 40i X-drive. So it would seem the Msport brake is +1” rotor diameter, different brake pad compound, and a coat of paint.

The red brakes are faster, because they're red. Red parts are always faster.

Always go with the M-Sport brakes. They make the car look better. From the functional standpoint, both systems MUST provide adequate stopping performance under normal use cases. As someone said above, it’s purely an aesthetical choice

I would also go with the larger brakes, just for the peace of mind, if you plan to tow anything

I tried both when test driving. Stopping distance was about the same for me, but the car felt heavier with the standard brakes.

The M Sport brakes on my45e work well but you can still feel the weight of the car when applying them at speed. Given that I'm glad to have them as an option.

I feel the brake is not the bottle neck, but the tires are.
