45e transfer box broken

Felt some mild stuttering when driving off. Both in electric as ice. Since the car is almost out of warranty, I brought it to the shop. Appeared the transferbox is broken and needs replacement. There is only 36k km on it. It is covered by warranty, but I’m surprised things start to break down this fast. It seems to be a known issue with the 45e.

It felt like driving over a broomstick a couple of times. At first I thought it was something on the road. But when testing it from 0 on a fresh laid piece of flat road I could feel about 2 or 3 “bumps”. Also when driving of from 0, sometimes felt like I floored the car while I was not. As if there was a short delay in driving off and suddenly make up for the lost time and give it all for a second. Making the CFO thinking I was going for a drag race. But hard to explain. At the dealer a mechanic stepped in the car. I demonstrated it to him both on electric and ice. He immediatelly said, transfer box. Known issue with the 45e. So be aware, if in doubt, have it checked. To prove it’s the transfer box, they put the car in neutral, mark the tires and manually push the car 20 wheel rotations. After that they measure the difference between front/rear. And if it’s within the margin, it’s probably tires/rims. If it’s outside the margin, it’s the transfer box. For warranty they even had to put on a different wheel set, to exlude them from the test.

Does this ( https://g05.bimmerpost.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1960587 ) sound like this x5 seem to have the same problem?

Wow, yes, that's just the same behavior as with mine. And since it's also a 45e, it's really worth ruling out the transfer box. I'll cross-post in that thread to make sure they read about my experience. Thanks, I hope this will be the solution for your problem as well. At least you can push the dealer to rule it out.

Any more detail what is actually the problem? Physically broken, like something crack, leak, clutch wore out … ? Or sensor related?

The transfer case issue appeared before. Indeed it seems to be a recurring issue

There has been multiple stories on this forum regarding 45e and transfer cases. Seems like 45e has a lot more issues then 40i

Why so? Bc of the extra weight of the batteries?

Broken transfer case at 36,000 kilometers is worrisome. Glad you're under warranty.

I am curious whether your 45e has tires of different diameters front and rear, or the roads are often slippery, so the transfer case has to work harder.

Slippery roads? That’s not an excuse. If the technical design is that bad, bmw must do something about that.

For winters I have the 20" styling 740M rims with winter tyres (same size, only different width).
For summers I have the 22" styling 742M rims with summer tyres (same size, only different width).

The dealer said it might have something to do with not swapping all tyres at the same time. But so far, I've only replaced the summer tyres, and did all 4 at the same time, allthough the rear tires weren't really worn out. So in my case I'm somehow "lucky" that it broke during warranty. But to be honest, with the bugs and shit I've had with this car, I'm looking at other brands for my next purchase. I've been driving BMW since 2007, (E46 330d, E91 335d, F15 M50d, G05 45e). The G05 was bought new, all the others were second hand. But with the G05 I've been so many times to the dealer (which always helped me very well) I've lost count.

We have normal well maintained roads in the Netherlands (so not like the Belgium off-road highways ). Not slippery to my opinion.

I have a towing hook, but only for a bike rack.

I wonder how the transfer case manages conditions that would cause internal binding? Something has to give/slip right? I never wanted a part time 4wd system again like my 4Runner had.

Oh, I feel exactly the same. 25 times at a dealer during 30k km of ownership. This was the worst car in terms of quality I’ve ever had (+ it was the first time I decided to order a car. All my previous were slightly used and never had any problems).

My 2016 Porsche Cayenne had an early transfer case failure, at about 20k miles. Common problem with Cayennes for awhile, and Porsche extended the warranty on the transfer case to something like 100k miles. Good thing, because the second transfer case failed a couple of years ago at about 70k miles.

I believe the transfer case used in the Cayenne was made by ZF, who likely make BMW's transfer cases as well.

I recently traded in a 2019 X5 50i with a bad transfer case. Luckily it was still under warranty. The symptoms were exactly as described by the OP.

Or just had the oil flushed.

Im having the same symptoms.
I installed a 4 new non flat tiers today and the symptoms are becoming more and more worse.

Thanks

Mine got fixed under warranty. I’m not sure if they replaced the complete transfercase or just parts of it. But parts were replaced, so not just an oil flush.
