New X5 50e road noise
Just picked up my 50e and I must say extremely disappointed with the excessive road noise I'm hearing. Have to turn the radio up just to drown it out. Seems like it coming from the left front or maybe that's just the area I'm closest to. I do have 21 inch run flats (Pirellis) and from what I've read this could be a problem. I realize that it's not going to be as quiet as my wife's X7 but it's not even close. We have 22 inch run flats (continental) on her car and its whisper quiet. It does seem to be missing the Harmonic Dampeners that are present on the X7. Not sure if they are included on the X5 or not with 21 inch wheels.
Other than the noise, the car is a dream. Very smooth with extremely quiet engine. Well over 40 mile electric range. Comfortable seats. The power is excellent even in electric mode only. Smooth and unnoticeable transition from electric to ICE. Looks like it going back to dealer. Going to ask to ride in similar equipped X5 and see if it's just my car. Considering tire swap. Anyone else experience this? Last edited by jkramerXXX7; 08-17-2023 at 07:09 PM.. |

If it were a pre-LCI, we know it should definitely have the dampers - see page 31 in this guide, section 10 on Axles: https://g05.bimmerpost.com/forums/at...5&d=1544379644

Do your control arms have the holes for the dampers to bolt through? |

Then I would ask the dealer to fit them - they are designed to reduce such noise and most people find they do actually work. I have tested my own car with and without them and they make a huge difference.

read through this thread. it's a link to the part on as shown on the 40i, but it should be the same on the 50e

My 45e (Euro spec) does not have those vibration absorbers. MY22 and factory M740 wheels with 20” BS Alenza run-flat summer tires (mixed setup).
I asked a local BMW dealer about this. The spare parts list (by VIN number) for my car does not show those parts at all. The service manager wondered why this is so and sent the question to the factory. He doubted that Euro cars would have these dampers at all. |

Originally, it was only specified for vehicles with the 22" wheels from the factory. The height of the sidewall will help determine the resonant frequencies, and whether it will help or not. I suppose different brands of the OEM tires could also play into it. Another thing to consider if you're replacing your tires...there's a reason why there are specially marked versions of tires selected by BMW for their vehicles...they test with the tire manufacturers and will often have the tire customized to adjust the NVH characteristics...pick a tire or wheel that isn't OEM, and you've lost all of those optimizations, so your results may differ. IOW, even the same brand and model of tire, one with the start and one without, can and often does have internal differences between the two.

Update...going back to dealer today. I've definitely isolated the noise to the left front area. Talked to dealer about dampers and they had no idea what I was talking about. Going to take the pictures with me today and enlighten them. I'm really hoping this can be fixed because the 50e is awesome in every other way.

Test drove a 2024 x5 sdrive with 22" staggered wheels. Extremely loud compared to my 2019 x5 xdrive i40 with 20" all season tires. I have acoustic glass as well. Used a decibel meter app on my phone on the same stretch of intersate traveling at 70 mph. My x5 averaged 57db the 24 x5 averaged 80db. I know the 22" tires will make a big difference but...really, that much?
Can anyone with a 2024 xdrive i40 tell me how quiet it is using a decibel meter on their phone? |

I was curious about why some cars have these from factory and some don't without much of a pattern of reasons.
Since my 23 45e with 20" inch wheels did not come with them. I ordered the parts ($140 for both sets). I am going to install them and report back if I noticed anything different. |

You have to take the measures on the same road/street, at the same speed for the both vehicles (with the windows closed of course) |

Any update on this? I have a 50e with base 20" M wheels on order and now worried it will be noisy. X5s are usually dead quiet and Car confections measured the LCI even quieter than last gen.
