How to make the tailgate button open the upper AND lower part?

When I press the tailgate button it only opens the upper part, not the lower one. How can I make it open both parts? I read the manual but could not find this specific case. They only cover the tailgate button on the keys and how to open the tailgate using my foot.

I don't think it does that. I did manage to program that it opens both with my foot under the bumper move.

Yeah I got that too but I'd like the tailgate button to behave the same way.

You can program the tailgate button to open the top and bottom tailgate and unlock the doors on my wife's X7. I don't have my X5 yet, but I hope the same functionality is in iDrive on it. Look under the key buttons configuration at the end of the list in the CAR settings.

Tailgate and doors
The button of the remote control can be configured
to control which part of the tailgate will be
opened and if the doors will be unlocked at the
same time.

Via iDrive:
1. "CAR"
2. "Settings"
3. "Key button settings"
4. Select the symbol.
5. Select desired setting:
▷ "Upper tailgate"
The upper tailgate is opened.
▷ "Upper tailgate + door(s)"
The tailgate is opened and the doors unlocked.
▷ "Both tailgates"
The upper and lower tailgate will be
opened.
▷ "Both tailgates + door(s)"
The upper and lower tailgate will be
opened and the doors unlocked.

Glad the X5 supports this feature. It's very handy.

The x5 manual says you can program the key fob to open both and the switch inside the driver side door but it doesn't say anything about the tailgate button it self.

Would be strange however to have it on the x7 and not on the x5

I think I tried to do this to because it seemed useful but I didn't find it either.

That for the key but not for the tailgate button.

Both are mentioned in the same section. The tailgate button on the interior and the remote control (key fob) tailgate button can be programmed similarly.

With Comfort Access: upper or both
tailgates
The button in the car's interior can be set
up to open only the upper tailgate or the
upper and lower tailgate together:
Via iDrive:
1. "CAR"
2. "Settings"
3. "Key button settings"
4. "Tailgate"
5. Select desired setting:
▷ "Upper tailgate"
Only the upper tailgate opens.
▷ "Both tailgates"
The upper and lower tailgate will be
opened together.

I know but the question was to program the switch on the tail gate it self to open both upper and lower parts. Not the key fob or driver door switch.

Oh, sorry I misunderstood. He didn't specify the location of the "tailgate button". No, I don't know the answer to that question.

Truthfully, I rarely use the tailgate button on the tailgate with the foot sweep and my key fob as options. Living in Minnesota, I don't want to touch the exterior tailgate button because it's likely dirty with road salt and dust.

My M50d has a manual lower tailgate.

So disappointed. I didn't even know that was possible. All the cars in the showroom were powered. I assumed that it was standard and would certainly be on my higher spec'd one. 😒

On a G05? I didn't even know that existed. Do you have pictures of the release method?

It has the same button as the power tailgate (I think). It just unlatches but doesn't move. You then just have to manually lift it up. I'll get you a picture tomorrow.

Crazy. I know the older models had a lever.

That's really odd. Can't wait to see what that looks like.

I would think it would be just like the lower tailgate on the F15, which had struts to help soften the landing. It is surprising and disappointing that your M50d is manual.

Here are the buttons from both parts of the tail gate. When I looked at it on collection, I assumed it was powered. Was only when I got it home and was showing someone that I realised I had to operate the lower section manually. Like an animal 😒

Did you call a dealership? You have the button, sounds like a defect.

Wow. I don't understand why they would do that given the button is there. Very strange.
