45e switching electric individual to hybrid

Hi fellow 45e drivers.

I have a feeling that a lot of us are starting up in electric individual and most of us encountered the spontaneous switch to hybrid setting.

Anyone who didn't see this in electric individual? Anyone has it solved by BMW?

Not a big issue by the way you can just switch back after a minute.

I've seen in a number of times.

If it's just a case of the car saying that the ICE needs to be run then it would be good if BMW could make that clear.

Otherwise it just feels just another G05 software glitch.

I have it happening quite often on my MY2020 45E with SW version 03/2019.70. I believe it's a bug. If it was an actual limitation, I shouldn't be able to select it (electric individual) immediately after the car has started up in hybrid (1s)...

Mine is mostly on electric. But after the over the air update to 11/2019.70 it was back to hybrid. And als some drivetrain errors that disappeared after driving first time.

My car was at the dealer today for this specific issue. In the computer there were 10 error incidents reported of the highvoltagebattery module. This module houses the relays for the highvoltage battery. Next week the module will be replaced by a new one, hoping that it solves the issue of switch to hybrid or starting in hybrid while it shouldn't. They will also upgrade my car software version to the latest next week. Will keep you updated!

Thx for sharing. Ps if you wait three weeks 07/2020 will probably be available.

So lots of 45e owners must be having this problem? It is posted a lot.

It's a big task which will take 2 days. They have to take out the complete high voltage battery pack. If lots of 45e owners have this issue, it must be something faulty in that module by design. I hope they will put a newer design module in my car. Otherwise I will have the same issue again in no time.

I don't want the new 07/2020 software version directly after it's released. Let someone else beta test it first. ;-)

It would be good to know if the issue is solved. Would be nice if you let us know the result.

It sounds like a lot of work. The only thing wrong is that it sometimes switches to hybrid. Or is there a bigger underlying problem?

I have the same problem as you but I just don't know if I want to take it in for 2 days and let them remove the HV battery.

Of course I'll post my results in this thread.
I had 3 problems. 1) the car sometimes switches from electric individual to hybrid while driving. 2) when starting the car it started up in hybrid instead of default electric individual. 3) one time the car started the petrol engine while drive mode was still in electric individual.

In all cases the blue edrive gauge was grey as in not available.

Since it is a 2 day job, I would recommend anyone with the issue to have it solved under warranty.

Until now I only had issue 1. And I have a lease with repair and maintenance for 4 years and then I am switching to something else. So I am going to wait a bit. I can understand why you did the repair off course

It happens more often since my update to 11/2019.70.

Had it happening a few times (2 or 3) in the 5 months before. Since the over-the-air update last week it happened 4 times already.

I'm not sure if it's software related. It seems to me that when you have the issue, it occurs more frequently when time is passing.

I am going to follow what happens to your car and look carefully at mine. I thought it was solved after update to 03/2020 but it happened once more a couple of weeks ago. If you plan to drive the car a long time better solve it now indeed.

Would be nice to know if there are any 45e owners that are not having the issue.

It will only happen if you start in electric individual as default I think. If you only drive in hybrid you won't see it

Just got my car back from the dealer. It took 3 days to replace the module and update the car. I'm now on software version 03/2020.58. In my previous software (03/2020.30) the auto park feature did not work. With the new version it worked instantly. Will monitor if the car switches to hybrid when it shouldn't and update this thread.

Problem is not fixed unfortunately. I've already had 2 occurrences since the repair. Will contact the dealer on Monday to see what the next steps will be. I think it's a software issue. For some reason the computer decides to switch to petrol while it shouldn't.

Sorry for you to hear that.

Do you drive on electric only a lot? Or does the ICE work regularly? Just trying to figure out if there is a system why it happens.

I haven't had it for quite a long time now. During the week it is electric only. I charge every day. Due to Covid we only did some visit our parents in Bree (2 x 150 km) or Amersfoort (2 x 200 km).

Due to covid, I mainly drive electric. Almost all short trips (< 5km). Sometimes larger trip 35-55 km, but still all electric. There is 2750 km on my car, but about 70% has been electric. I charge every night or during daytime when there is surplus from the solar panels.

Since the update in March I have 2000 km and also 70% electric. Mostly short drives and only charging at home. So similar.

Since one week a lot of automatic switching to hybrid again. I don't understand why. I drove all electric around 100 km this week but drove on the ICE all weekend.

It is not a problem. I can switch to electric. But the OCD side of me wants to know why.

Interestingly, I had this for the first time today.
It happened when I wanted to slip into a hole i traffic, so I figured it was due to the acceleration I asked.
When I tried to switch back, I got a message saying the system was preventing electric mode for about a minute.
