Steering wheel wont extend???
Anybody had any issues with the steering wheel not extending back to the preset position? Mine has stopped working, I can move it up and down, but can not extend it with the controller on the left side of the steering column. This car has been such a colossal disappointment.

Mine has done this, but only after a remote start right after pressing start/stop to turn it on fully when I get in the car. Sometimes it starts to move to the normal position, sometimes it doesn't. What I have figured out was if I press start/stop and just let it do its thing before i try to drive off it works. But many times as soon as I try to drive off, if it is still adjusting the seats/steering wheel, it will just stop. Hasn't failed during a normal start. Seems like an odd bug for sure. May not be what you are experiencing at all, but thought I would add. :-)

Mine stop retracting and extending earlier this week at 5100 miles. (2019 X5 50i with m-sport) Will still go up and down. Already had an appointment scheduled for later this week for another issue. Will report back on the resolution.

Have you restarted iDrive since it stopped? That may bring it back.

I had this issue too. Left it 2 hours - nothing. Left it overnight and it fixed itself.
I've asked my dealer to take a look when it goes in for its next software upgrade. It's not generating any error messages anywhere now so who knows what the issue is, but these kind of telescopic steering issues have been reported for over a decade! |

My local dealer cant look at it for 4 weeks!!! Ridiculous. Anyway, rang Emergency Assistance and they are hopefully coming to look shortly, and if they cant rectify it they will recover it. |

It was worth a shot. One time my thigh extension stopped working and an iDrive restart got it back, same thing a few times for seat ventilation and massage. Good luck, hope yours gets fixed.

Greatly appreciated....you know the odd thing about this, last week I got in the vehicle and my date and time had reset to some random date in the past. No biggie, but odd as I never had that happen with any previous BMW and have not had any of the issues some have experienced here. I'll reset it as I thought it was some sort random software glitch. Then a couple of days later, I got in felt that the seat was not in the same position I left it. The thigh extension had retracted all the way in and I normally drive with it extended out a bit. (I'm the only one that drives it.) Again, no biggie, I'll just recall the seat position from memory. When I pressed it, it said no memory stored on iDrive for both 1 & 2. I was perplexed because I know I had saved the setting because I fooled around with all of the adjustments for hours getting it just right (luxury seating package) and had learned my lesson after I forgot to save the setting before taking it in for service. Whoever worked on it that day must have had the need to be comfortable driving it into a service bay. So while fine tuning everything again, that's when I noticed that the steering wheel wouldn't extend. Hopefully it's software related but concerned about what others have written about steering column replacement.

If it's not a hardware issue. Proceed to press and hold whatever your memory seat number is until the column reaches the preset position. If that fixes the issue, it'll be good for a while until it acts up again next time |
