Also, what % of the sound would you say has been reduced? Is it something you'd now have to listen for to hear it or is the sound still hard to ignore? Thanks! |

Before, you could hear it over the radio at a normal level.
Now, the hollow noise is still there. Music at normal volume covers up the noise. On some stretches of concrete pavement, there is some elevated noise but its not constant and annoying like it was before.

Also do you know if there's a way for me to check if counterweights were installed on the control arms from the factory? |

Spoke to BMW... shareyourthoughts@bmwusa.com
So I had a call with BMW NA, with the Customer Experience team and filed a report about my car and this thread. I took the opportunity to share THIS Topic and link with them yesterday. They said they are unaware of the issue and would open up a claim. I would SUGGEST that everyone with this issue send an email with this Thread Link to shareyourthoughts@bmwusa.com and ask to have it forwarded to Kylie and Bernadette Q. Maybe they will pay attention as more people call it out. Here is the email reply I received today.
Hi Mr. Palmer: Thank you for your response. We have received your e-mail with the attached link and included it with the notes from your conversation with Kylie on 05/4/2020. @palmerman
Here's the response I got back... smh While we are able to assist with features and technology within your vehicle, we are not trained in a mechanical capacity. Your local BMW center has technicians that are able to better assist you with your tire noise concerns. I regret any inconvenience this may cause. Should you need to access a list of our authorized BMW centers, please visit our website at: www.bmwusa.com, and select "Dealer Locator." |

You referring to counterweights on the control arms? Do you know if I could easily check to see if mine has these installed and where I would look?

I took delivery of my 40i yesterday, riding on 22s with contis and M-sport adaptive suspension.
Could not discern any noticeable noise from the tires or suspension, and I tried a variety of roads and speeds today. |

Someone pls help us with how to check if there are counterweights on our cars or not? I'm really hoping it's a simple fix. |

It's bolted onto the front control arm (not the front thrust arm).
I'll try and post a part # this week.

Executive Office Response
A BMW employee, Chris, from the Executive Offices in New Jersey HQ called me informing me my "case" had been sent up to him. We had a great phone call yesterday. I informed him about the "humming" in my new X5 on the 22" rims and about this thread about the issue. We agreed it would be great to figure this out for me and for everyone else. So to that end, he is reaching out to Rusnak service manager to have him call me to get the car in for a look. COVID is not helping though, as I am not sure if we can test drive the car together. My thought is to have them swap all 4 rims for 21" and go for a spin. Also have them look for the counterweights and see if that is an issue. Open to any other questions or suggestions...from the group. I'll keep you posted, but the good news is we have the attention of BMW USA at the highest levels it appears.

At this point, I'm hoping that the counterweight is the solution for the issue at this point, but let us know what you find out. Thanks again |
