I experienced no change in behavior after upgrading to iOS 17. CarPlay still works, but I frequently have to reboot iDrive to get my phone recognized again.

in my experience 17 appears to be better than 16: it still drops connection occasionally, but I don’t need to reboot idrive anymore - just go to mobile menu and force connect the phone on CarPlay does the trick

Add me to the list. iDrive reboots 2-3 times in a row every other time I get in the car. iPhone seldom pairs on it's own. Rebooting manually helps but not a sure thing every time.
Also noticing that my GPS will periodically stop tracking the location of the car and the only way of fixing it is to reboot the iDrive. Last but not least, I just got a "Emergency call system malfunction" error today on the main display. Love the car but this is getting a little absurd. |

Has anyone gone to a dealer for this issue and if so what were you told/ was anything done?
I really don’t want to go just to have them tell me they have no fix. |

same for me -- iOS 16 vs 17 on my 14 Pro had no impact. This is also now an issue on my new iPhone 15 Pro, too. Same issues where it loses connection.

I haven't noticed any dropped connections once established ("hey siri" turned off), but probably 1 in 10 times the phone doesn't connect automatically. And very rarely the phone can't even be manually connected until I power cycle everything. Annoying but still works better than in my last car.
*edit: Phone has been on iOS 17 the whole time I've had the car. Last edited by Lionel Hutz; 09-24-2023 at 10:05 PM.. |

I am also having same issue ever since I got my 24 x5. Id8, then updated to 8.5 by dealer, no luck. Ios 16-17 still same issue. I have been rebooting my idrive minimum once a day. I sometimes think I will mess up the volume button one day. Clearly I am eating volume button’s lifetime possibly by 10x. SAs have no idea about these cars. They cannot even tell what iDrive version is the latest.
I have a propable cause in my mind. Do you guys think Apple Wallet Digital Key has smt to do with this problem we all having? Because I see “Accessory” in bluetooth menu is always connected to my car. As long as I am within the range(say 50feet), car is ‘technically’ off, its still connected. Those, who havent had any carplay connection problems, have you guys been using digital key plus? |

If so, I would delete the phone from the BMW and re connect, make sure Carplay is selected during pairing not Bluetooth. I noticed in the phone connection screen that Carplay has a separate selection, so your phone may be paired but Carplay also needs to be checked. |

This could be purely coincidental but when I use my iPhone only to operate the vehicle, CarPlay always works. I leave the key fob at home and carry only my phone and not once has it failed. Wierd.

I have been using my phone as digital key plus and have been having these issues at last once a week having to reset the system for CarPlay. Luckily the car itself still recognizes the phone as the key or that would be a major problem.

I have a update on this Bluetooth version message. Although I thought Siri was turned off with CarPlay, in fact it had turned itself on again at some point.
So I deleted the phone from idrive and deleted idrive from the phone. Then went through repairing process again, ensuring not to enable Siri for CarPlay. So far … no more annoying Bluetooth version messages when connecting. Your mileage may vary ofcourse., and maybe only follow these instructions when it’s a full moon. Update: Although the message about Bluetooth version hasn't popped up, the phone still fails to connect to the car quite often. Last edited by apw2607; 10-10-2023 at 04:38 PM.. |

I've been experiencing a similar issue where I start up my car and apple carplay wont be connected then all of a sudden the middle screen will go blank and reboot and the middle screen went blank as well saying temporarily unavailable. This happened a few times, when I would reboot iDrive it would be fixed temporarily. I took it to the dealership today and they did a hard software update, upon reentering the car I noticed that the check engine light was on so I showed it to them and they removed it. I'm hoping this is the last of having to reboot iDrive every few days.
On a side note Ive also experienced an issue with sound when playing songs via wireless carplay where the music will cut in and out for a few seconds and then it will be fine for the remainder of the drive. This has happnened a few times, not sure if anyone else has experienced this. I opted for the B&W sound system so not sure if thats an issue pertaining to the B&W system. And lastly when it comes to Apple Maps in carplay whenever I press the app in carplay a screen gets displayed saying to allow access from my phone or something but when I go into my phone under the Maps setting everything seems to be ok, not sure if this is a Maps glitch for 8.5. I just recently updated my phone ios to 17 as well |

I thought maybe if i removed carplay and just used bluetooth audio and phone it would at least reliably work each day. Nope, that doesnt work either. On several occasions the phone fails to connect to the car.
Its going to be interesting to find out which version of 07/2023 BMW has picked for the OTA remote software update, because if its anything below 07/2023.40 we are all screwed. |
