Almost like you are driving the 50 engine
14mpg is easy to beat in a 50i with city driving with a light foot. I wonder if he's driving in Sport or just flooring the gas every time the light turns green

Looking at the posts, consumption obviously varies considerably. I'm on fence re: 40i vs. 50i. Would I be correct in estimating the 50i would be at about 4 mpg disadvantage? This isn't primary deciding factor.

I have a 40i.

I ran Comfort mode for the first few tanks of fuel and averaged 19.4mpg with mixed city and highway.

I have been running Adaptive mode the last 1,000 miles and I am not averaging 21.4mpg with mixed city and highway.

I've noticed the same - adaptive is more fuel efficient then comfort.

Hummm!!! Interesting. I have been driving in Eco since I got the car 4 weeks ago. I will try Adaptive now.

I'd say that is fairly close. I've driven both for a while in mixed driving and that is around where they have been. Difference may be a little greater in pure city driving.

It's also very cold in Toronto right now (-21 Celsius / -6 Fahrenheit this morning), so that will also be negatively affecting the fuel economy.
Your conversion is MPG (Imperial). US MPG conversion would be 18.4 MPG.

Is anyone checking this way or you relying on the car's electronics?

I did it the old fashion way driving cross country from Spartanburg to California wiith some side trips along the way. This mileage includes some city driving, some 80+ mph driving, and driving into heavy winds. I am totally happy that this 40i G05 gets this kind of mileage under these circumstances.

132.0 Gallons 3253 miles 24.6 MPG

I checked the electronic calculation and got 24.5 MPG. I was surprised and impressed by how close the electronic calculation was to the real, actual calculation.

I'll do a long drive home from Spartanburg as well, although not nearly as long as yours; probably 850 miles. What did they tell you at the performance center about engine break in?

ECO should give you better number than Adaptive

For breakin period, they told me 1200 miles. Keep it under 100 mph and 4000 rpm. Don't use cruise control at a constant speed. That's what I remember anyway. I was taking in so much info with 2 hours with the guy that teaches the geniuses.

Few questions for those who have the X40i.

1. What was the best MPG you got on highway?
2. How much fuel reserve did you have left when you filled up the gas tank after reaching 0 miles on the miles to empty? The gas tank size is small at 21.9 gallons.
3. Did anyone get more than 500 miles or so on a tank with mainly highway driving?

Reason I ask is that we have a 2015 X5d and want to get at least 500 miles or so on tank for work commute during the week. The lease on the X5d ends next month and we have ordered a loaded X5 40i.

Can people post their estimates or impressions of fuel economy in city driving mostly? I know that it's difficult to separate city from highway, but very curious on how the car does with mostly city driving. Do you get close to 20 mpg as advertised by BMW, or is it closer to 15? Any info, theories, guesses would be appreciated. Thanks!

I get closer to 15 when strictly driving in the city

Recent 40i road trip, including several days of Orlando traffic. 1074 miles, 43.6 gallons. 24.6 mpg. Matches computer display exactly.

Thank you for this info. BTW, out of the 1074 miles, how many times did you fill up?

That was three stops. My wife took the trip, and she gets nervous below half tank. Max fill was 17 gallons.

I’m happy with the range. 500 miles might be a stretch, but can probably be done if you are careful. My “tank” can’t go that far....

I just picked up my 40i in San Antonio and drove it back to Houston. It had 5 miles on it and I had it on comfort mode all the way home. Cruising at 70-75mph and got 25.4 mpg

100% depends on your driving style. My 50i can manage 15mpg city but no with how I drive... The 40i can get 20mpg city too if your foot is a feather in Eco Pro mode.

I get 17mpg city driving in an F15 35i. Don't know how people do much better than that. Eco pro makes no difference in stop and go traffic - from what I find.

Just got through about 300 miles... Did 80-85 a lot of the way, but hit a few pockets of traffic that lowered my mpg... used just over 1/2 a tank. Impressed with it. Eco Pro for the entire trip.
