and for many of the reasons cited in this article, is why I picked the X5 over the 2020 GLE 450. Hopefully the "gremlins" will be negligible when I take delivery. Keeping the fingers crossed!

Good review....I like the 40i 4.8 0-60 time.
I don't agree that the GLE is the "looker"....granted it enjoys a better/wider color palette, but front & side styling IMO is better on the BMW. Rear views a bit awkward on both. I think you have to look to the Cayenne for the winner in style category. And the wide-screen iPad dash on the MB still looks off.

If you look at the photo of the shifter area on the X5 is has the adjustment for height. Isn't that only available on models with air suspension? Given they might be stock photos but not sure.

Nah it's the photo from the vehicle they were testing.

"The BMW also is easier to drive at its limits, with impressive stability and a steel-coil-spring suspension that smoothly soaks up midcorner bumps without disrupting your driving line or your confidence in its roadholding."

It's just bad automotive journalism when the editor doesn't mention that the X5 they were driving also had air suspension or compare the two or contribute BMW's handling and ride to it.

Garage List
I saw a 450 in a parking lot yesterday. It is a good size, I like the larger SUVs. So I got online to price it. As I suspected, to get what I got in my car the sticker price was $20k more than my X5. Mostly because you have to buy a lot of packaged stuff that I, personally, wouldn’t want to pay for.

I hated the MB I test drove, but it was a smaller suv because it seemed more in line with what I wanted to spend. The dealer also treated me like shit. I had called to make an appointment and they left me sitting in an older model car that happened to be parked outside. All black, inside and out (yech).

Wasn’t hot, but I couldn’t even figure out how to adjust the seats to amuse myself while waiting for someone for at least 20 minutes. Awful experience.

The only thing I like about the GLE is the number of ambient color choices rather than the few that BMW gives us... other than that meh.

Almost every review seems to be using this same X5- an x-line with air suspension. That option is super rare and maybe 1 or 2 people out of 100 will get it. I think I only came across one X5 that had air suspension when I was shopping for my X5 and i live in L.A..

Surprising “In the real world, the X5 also rides a bit more comfortably than the softer GLE, which isn't as smooth over larger impacts.”

It is an odd choice.

I bought the one of the few air suspension X5 my dealer has seen or sold so far and I live in a good size market.

The MB GLE is way over priced and is inferior to the new X5 on many levels from my perspective.
MB in general is over pricing all their models without any reason or quality improvements. It just seems like they are fishing to see how far aspirational buyers will pay to have the MB emblem.

So based on this it appears the BMW air suspension is not floaty and works really well.

Yea so either is has the third row or the rear wheel steering (which I have not heard good things about)...

Turns out it did have air suspension. See email from the writer of the article below (I emailed him and he responded almost immediately). Article already updated!

Mark,

I just double checked. You’re right, it did have the air suspension. I’m embarrassed by the error. So sorry. We’ll fix the story.

MB aspirational buyers always opt for the light up star in the grill... At least they do here in TX.

The reason I prefer my MB over my BMW are the simple things, like all the features really work as advertised. Another simple thing BMW cannot figure out, the MB a/c actually cools the car quickly without sounding like I'm in a hurricane.

Rear wheel steering is awesome. Not sure where you heard anything negative about it.

Does the GLE sound like a transformer when you approach it? Every time I get in my X5 it’s like I’m climbing into Optimus Prime with all the motors whirring, like it’s about to turn into a 20 foot tall robot.

I heard it can make the car twitchy. Saw that in a couple online video reviews as well. With that said I have not driven one with it so can't comment personally.

As someone who has one with air and rear steering, all I can tell you is that it’s just awesome. And I had M4 before x5, so I have bases for comparison

I think air suspension is rare in general. I didnt see any in most of the lots when we were shopping at. We wanted a softer ride and wanted to test out the air suspension before ordering, but bite the bullet and just just ordered it since none were available.

I do see the MB brand as a bit classier than BMW, but prefer BMW's design and the way it drives much more. I dont consider myself a hardcore BMW fan yet (only own 2), but if price point was switched around, i would still consider the G05!
