I cannot seem to figure out why my headlights seem to occasionally stay on after i have left the car. The engine is obviously not running, but the lights occasionally (much more than i would like) end up staying on. My neighbors have called me a few times when they are on overnight.

What can be causing this? The keys are removed from the car when i leave as they stay in my pocket when driving.

When parked at home is the key close enough to the car to 'wake' it up? Every time I look at my vehicle in the garage the lights are on, but it's because it wakes up when the key is nearby (in my pocket). I have it set to auto-unlock. I've checked it with the key not in my pocket, and it's always off.

I have the same problem. Locking the car shuts the lights off, but when the car is unlocked they sometimes stay on indefinitely.

Check your "Home light" settings.

Settings > Exterior lighting > Home lights.

The lights remain on for a period of time after you've locked and left your car. BMW call it "Headlight courtesy delay feature".
You can choose how long the lights stay on.

we found that if you open the driver door before you turn the car off, that the headlights and interior LED lights would stay on for an extended time. try making sure that you turn the car off first, then open the driver door, and see if that makes a difference

This is what I have mine set to do and in the dark garage, it’s always on a delay off.

I have noticed it starts happening from few days ago.
The headlights remain on even if I lock the car.
I set the home setting to 10 sec though.

Yes same thing happened to mine. I won’t call it an issue, just I cannot find a consistency of why this happen. I know for sure when I lock the car, all lights are off tho.

I don’t think it is related to pressing the start/stop button before opening the driver door. I don’t think my routine changes, it is a die hard habit by now. I almost want to say it is related to ambient light condition when the car is shut off, but this is just a guess.

Do you maybe use the blinker stalk inadvertently after shutting it off? I think that enables the parking light?

I never use it, so not sure and too lazy to look it up right now.

This has occurred on my 45e a couple of times. The headlights & taillights remained on over an hour before I noticed. The car was plugged in. The Auto button was lit. When I pressed the Auto button off then on again the lights went out. Pressing the Start/Stop button when exiting is habitual but it's possible I failed on those occasions.

I have a friend who said his X3 headlights "do the same thing"!! I discovered that he was sitting toooooo close to the steering wheel (he's short) and bumping the switch with his knee whenever he exited the vehicle.

After coaching him on a MORE APPROPRIATE & SAFER seating position - THE MYSTERIOUS HEADLIGHT ISSUE DISAPPEARED!

I sometimes hit the light control panel without knowing it when I enter/exit the X5. I get out only to find one of the parking lights lit and wonder what's going on. I've since learned to look at the light control panel and if the Auto LED is not green, then I know one of the other buttons was inadvertently hit. I don't think this is the OP's dilemma though but just throwing it out there.

It happens to me snd I found how it happens.
When you are driving into a garage the headlights turned on automatically.
By that time the auto start/stop button must be off (ie it is active) to see the symptom.
When you park the car and it is still D mode, the engine will shut down to save fuel yet the battery still supplies the power (ACC on).
Even if you press the engine power button to turn off the engine the headlight remains on.
And the headlight remains on forever even though you get out og the car and lock the car.
Obviously it is the flaw in the electrical system.

Huh? When driving in a garage or dark area, the headlights will only turn on when you have them set to Auto. Not sure what you are referring to about an auto start/stop button having anything to do with the lights, the light control panel is by your left knee, correct? Many times people hit that panel with their knee when getting in/out and without realizing it. If your knee presses on a button, like on or the left or right parking light, that light will stay on full time. If the headlight button is on auto, it will auto turn on/off like it is supposed to do. There are no indications of an electrical system quirk when operated this way.

If I have misunderstood you, pls rephrase ok?

Yes this is a problem affecting many drivers. It has nothing to do with home settings. If you leave the car unlocked, and headlamps are set to Auto, you can come back to the car in several hours and they still will be on. Under no circumstances should the car allow this to happen. My dealer has acknowledged that this is a problem with many of the new X5s but unclear about a solution. For me, locking the car when I exit seems to solve the issue. Not a great solution but better than nothing.

my lights are set to AUTO and my X5 remains unlocked in my garage, but my lights consistently turn off immediately contrary to what you said

Are you talking strictly about the LCI X5 (2024)? I have a 2021 and have never experienced the issue you are referring to.

Actually what I said was “many drivers” not “all drivers.” But I’m happy for you that your headlights turn off consistently.
