You can do it using the inbuilt Spotify App .. I use voice search to find songs on mine. Not tried via Car Play

If you have 7/2019.xx software go to media and scroll down to personalise menu, it should be listed there. If it is checked but not visible as a music source phone BMW Connected Drive team and ask them to refresh Spotify App.

Spotify should be available as a media source with latest 07/2019.xx software. It is not dependent on your phone Android or iOS but does need your phone for the internet access. It connects to your Spotify Account directly. If you do not see Spotify as an option in the Media menu scroll down and click on "Personalise Menu" here you can select which sources you want to appear under Media. You should see Spotify listed there, if it is already checked then you need to ask BMW to push the App to your vehicle. There is a known issue with it not appearing. It took me two calls to BMW Connected Drive team and a few hours wait for it to appear in my car.
When you first access the App it will present you with a QR Code to scan which then logs you into your Spotify account. Similar to Office 365 in Europe Hope that helps? |

Awesome! I didn't know I can have Spotify on the iDrive. I thought they have killed it on the new iDrive.
Btw, you can't search Spotify on Apple CarPlay, however, Spotify just announced an update that enables Siri to control Spotify. Technically, once this update is available, you can have Siri do some actions on Spotify (not sure if search a song or artist would be one). How would I know if I am on 7/2019.xx software? If I wasn't, should I update from iDrive or go to a dealer?

OTA updates are not available so you will need to have a dealer do the update. |

That's my question. I'm based in the US and had a call with the genius line the other day for something unrelated. The genius I spoke with mentioned Spotify wasn't available outside of CarPlay, but I didn't have the time to fully explore what his claim was. Can anyone in the US confirm that a standalone Spotify app is available in US iDrives?

I am in Australia and I called BMW Support, they advised me that no third party app support (including Spotify) is available natively through iDrive. They didn't even seem to know that it is available through CarPlay. So not sure if they even know what they are talking about.

In that case there is hope for Spotify. Can't be a 100% certain but in the U.K. we have o365 and Spotify App. In the U.S. I don't think they have o365 and not seen anyone over there with Spotify yet.
Do you have a dedicated connected drive team in Aus? In the U.K. we have a bmw team that just deals with connected drive issues. |

See image below from BMW connected drive website for technical requirements. Maybe it is not rolled out in all countries yet? These details are new I've had Spotify App for a few weeks now.
