G05 M50i 21" vs. 22" wheels?
21" wheels have run flats, 22" wheels do not. Run flats have stiffer sidewalls by design. 22" wheels will have less rubber tire height. Which ones will have the stiffer ride?
21" with run flats will have stiffer and more rubber protection/insulation(tire height) for getting rim damage from rough roads, correct? |

Yes... 21s will have a taller sidewall, and more protection frim pothole damage. I ordered the 21s for that very reason.
I'm going off memory..... but if I recall correctly, the tire sizes for 21s are; 275/40/21 - front 315/35/21 - rear And for 22s, they are: 275/35/22 - front 315/30/22 - rear |

The 22” are non-run flat and they provide a nice comfortable ride from my limited experience (~300mi). I’ve not driven the 21” but that is what I ordered for the reasons above—some Boston roads are great, some not so much. At $400-$500 for these big tires, a little extra pothole protection was the deciding factor.

RFT = Run-Flat
NonRFT = Non Run-Flat Getting stuck on the side of the road with a 5000 lb truck in the rain and changing to a small spare tire in a suit wasn't what I would call the highlight of my day last winter when I opted for the Non-RFT on my F15. Keep in mind that RFT technology has gotten a LOT better compared to what it was even 5 years ago. The gap between RFT and NonRFT in terms of comfort has become a lot closer. This time around, I'm going with the RFT w/21's. Peace of mind goes a long way. |

I have 22" and it is very comfy. However, it probably has a lot to do with my air suspension.
My X3 for comparison with 21" RFT with no air suspension is a harsh ride. |

Well now I am starting to change my mind.
Still have time to change the wheels as my build got delayed because I ordered Ivory White /Night Blue Full Merino leather. Guess it held back my production. Since I am pretty my ordering everything EXCEPT for night vision, parking assistance, air suspension ( I prefer harder core handling), glass controls, anthracite headliner, rear seat entertainment, Bowers and Wilkins, I thought what the heck, I should just go with the 22" wheels. I will get Tirerack 20" snow wheels. The 22" are non-runflats, that are actually cheaper to replace than 21" run-flats. Not by much, but that is my excuse! |

One thing to be aware of - winter or even all season options on the 22's are very, very limited.
After I got my X7 M50i with the 22's, BMW told me I was required to put on either all seasons or winters (something about rules of leasing and the 22's only coming with summer tires). Then they told me there were literally no all season or winter tires that fit the rear wheels. Told me I would have to order 21" wheels with tires, which would be $4k or $5k. Eventually found a tire that will work, but it's 315/30/22, which is a very low sidewall. If I could do it over again I'd probably go 21's. |
