I used to get that message when i used the controls in the boot/trunk and i had the rear window Child lock illuminated in the drivers door control. Once i turned this off it stopped saying they were unlocked and would return to their correct position.

I believe that the latest firmware 07/2020 54 disables the the window child lock function stopping the rear seats moving.

Clearly the rear right seat lock function is a common fault and may be linked to the window child lock function

There's an SIB on this issue. https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/tsbs/20...79000-9999.pdf.

I just received 7/2020.81 and it states that the window switch no longer disables the rear seats from moving.

I was able to get rid of the error by making seats go full cycle: fold-unfold and into 3rd row access position and back.

SOLVED: Rear seat unlocked error

I finally figured out how to solve this problem.

1. Push the rear window lock button so that it is on (e.g. green light on). The rear window lock button is on the drivers side left arm rest next to the window up/down buttons.
2. Fully tilt the rear seat forward (push the button on the side of the rear seat so that seat tilts forward).
3. Fully put the rear seat back into standard position (put either the horiontal button on the side of the rear seat or the reset all button on the rear seat near the seat adjustment controls.

Note. This did not work for me until I pushed the window lock button for the rear seats. I don't know why that it matters that it is on (green LED lit), but it does matter.

Update : This was fixed by the dealer during service, the invoice states a loose connection under the seat,
they also did the software update so not sure what was the root cause

Just got the 2022 X5 with 3rd row. The kids were playing around with the buttons on the 2nd row and now getting the "right rear seat unlocked" error. Tried fold/unfold and tilt/un-tilt but still message on the dashboard. Any other suggestions besides taking to service? Thanks

Hi all, I am considering purchasing a 2020 G05 CPO. Upon inspection, the right second row seat was already non-operational and with the unlocked sear error (which also makes the front row passenger seat non-operational).

It still has 2 full years warranty but do not want to find myself having to visit the dealer constantly for resetting a unlocked seat issue (per what I have read in this thread.

Is this a persisting defect with 3rd row owners that requires a visit to the dealer for fixing or is this user error?

I appreciate your input on this :-)

BMW has figured out how to correct this through a stepped order of elimination process. My car has been in a few times (BMW of Bellevue in greater Seattle area, WA) and finally now both sides are fixed after they replaced sensors and motors on both left and right rear seats.

I would say be prepared for a your car being at the dealer for few days and potentially 2 or three repeat visits (frustrating I know) for a complete resolution.

But… they will get it sorted, you just need to be patient with them and hold them accountable for getting it permanently solved.

Apparently I'm going through the same issue currently. My dealer had my 2020 X5 for a week and worked with BMW engineers. They finally determined and approved to replace the seat frame and motor. So I will see when the parts come in and get them replaced.

Got the same issue on my 2022 3rd row X5. First started when my daughter used the control to lay down the seat back (got right rear error) a month later my son did the same on his seat so now I have both rear left and right error. I have booked an appointment with the dealer in Canada with a car loaner and first available car in July, so I will wait and see. So disappointed, got this issue just after 5 months of purchasing.

This worked on my X7 after I cleared the error codes with BimmerLink.
