Are all of the steering interventions and assists turned off?

Yes, that was the first thing I messed around with when the problem first arose a couple months ago. I thought maybe the combo my SA suggested by having all interventions off and the car in sport mode there was a chance the problem might go away. No such luck.

So today I turned EVERYTHING off. I had forgot to turn off blind spot steering intervention previously. Turning it all off and putting in sport mode did seem to help, but not completely.

I see a class action lawsuit coming.

What is the latest build date that has had this problem? Is it still something that exists in current builds or was it just early versions? Has anyone who had the problem been updated to the latest iDrive software and/or had the camera replaced?

Mine is updated to the latest software; I believe version .65 and anything else outstanding was also completed last week. I have a very early build, so can't speak to whether or not the steering problem exists on recent builds.

I have .65 as well and the problem still exists.

Thanks for that. Did you guys have the KAFAS camera replaced? Before I got delivery of mine I was discussing issues with my CA and the service manager and he said that early in the production run there were bad cameras and when the updated ones were put into production it took care of issues. Don't know though whether this steering issue is included.

Does anyone else agree some "agency" should get involved with this? NTSB, NHTSA? It was -1 degree this morning with slick roads, and that Fing car was all over the damn road. This is a danger to me and my family, and to anyone who is near me on the road. I bought a big expensive AWD SUV to be safe, not to fear driving it.

I think Car and Driver, CNET, etc, should also be notified.

I would assume by now it has been reported to the NHTSA but never hurts to do it. Here is the link:

I don't know how C&D, CNET, etc. deal with issues like that. Many times they seem to be ignored or downplayed due to revenue/advertising reasons. I'm sure Consumer Reports would be interested.

I searched for complaints on the NHTSA site and the first screen I'm presented with shows there have been two recalls, a complaint and some communication. Unfortunately when I click on any of the links to get more info it shows there has been no activity for the X5.

This is precisely why I've refused to take my vehicle back. I'm not comfortable behind the wheel of a 2.5 ton vehicle with electrical gremlins that cause it to steer erratically & unpredictably on winter roads. I'm mind blown that BMW hasn't taken this more seriously and I've already reported it to the Canadian version of NHTSA - Called them and took 2 mins to start a file. Canadians;

I hope this gets sorted out before anything or anyone seriously gets hurt or injured.

Shame that BMW knows of it yet keeps delaying the fix.

The vehicle is literally a dangerous weapon if it's erratic and behaves unpredictably on the road, and in treacherous conditions (freezing temps, snow, icy roads) no less.

My 50i M-Sport is a week old and I thought I was losing my mind. -15 today here in Minnesota and the steering is just weird. Early in the drive on a side road at 30 MPH I had to fight it from pulling right. Once on the freeway it was constant adjustments like it was really windy outside (it wasn't). When the temps are warmer, say above 20 it is fine.

This is a crazy safety problem. Best bet is getting dealers and BMWNA aware plus reporting it to the NHTSA. Since it is a safety issue and cannot be fixed, it would qualify for a lemon law case/BMW buyback.

I have the camera issue also that my dealer is trying to figure out. I'll probably just open a case with BMWNA to document it and tell the dealer I am going to push BMW hard on this.

I love the car, but have had a BMW buyback in the past. My service advisor has been awesome over the years, so hopefully he can help figure this out.

I’m in MN too. What camera issue are you talking about. Also, which dealer do you go to?

Mine only give me issues when the camera gets covered in winter road grime. I go to BMW mtka - have been for 11 years. Had one terrible experience with Motorwerks and never went back.

I reported. I think others should too if they have experienced this steering issue. I also reported the emergency braking issue

I too submitted my complaint. This absolutely must be addressed. Today was the worst it has ever been. It was almost undriveable.

I'm glad I stumbled on this thread. I thought I was going crazy and have been trying to figure out what it is and when I am seeing this issue.

It is so bad that it feels dangerous to drives at times.

I reported mine yesterday. My dealer checked on this today and said BMW does not have a software fix yet. Same recommendation to use Sport Mode.

Potential good news everyone. The Service Manager at my dealer is awesome and all over this. He is pushing hard with BMW to get the fix released. Appears it took a while for BMW to agree this was an issue. I’ll keep you posted.
